Born in Wake Co. farmer enlisted at age 21 on Feb 12, 1862 for 12 months sevice Wounded in action in Washington, NC Sept 6, 1862 Detailed as a guard in the Quartermaster Dept, Raleigh, NC until retired to Invalid Corps 12/6/1864 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE published in Weekly Standard, Raleigh NC Oct 1, 1862 For the Standard Camp Gordon, Sept.23, 1862 Mr Editor:-- After the late attack upon Washington, some of our wounded soldiers were, by request of the Ladies of Greenville, Pitt County, NC, carried to a hospital established in the town of Greenville by the patriotic ladies of that place.--Among the wounded was a member of my company of cavalry, Marshall Rowland, who was severely wounded in the hand. 'Tis a pleasant duty, devolving upon myself, to thank them for their unremitted attention and kindness, not only to my own, but to other wounded soldiers in their charge. Their kindness, tenderness, and hospitality, can never be surpassed. And when this unholy war shall have come to a close, our country will not be more indebted to her brave soldiers, than to the beautiful and lovely part which the women of the Southern Confederacy have acted.
