Notes
a. Note:   We ran this in the Times Dispatch in Walnut Ridge, Ark. in June 1988. In Memorium IN MEMORY of Carl Whittaker who passed away six years ago June 10, 1982. Sunshine passes, shadows fall, love remembrance outlasts all, memories of you come our way, time and years go swiftly by but loving memories never die. Wife, Allie, Children, Barbara, Neil, Ruby and Carla. Story From Howard Meadows: Fun activities were done on Sunday afternoon. The other days of the week was work and on Sundy morning it was church. They liked to have corn cob fights. They also would go out into the woods for hog and dog fights. They, (Howard and Harold Meadows ,Carl and Walter Whittaker) would take the dogs and go out to find a wild hog. One Sunday afternoon Carl, Walter, Howard and Harold went on this mission of harrassing the hogs. The hogs were dangerous and would attack anything that moved. They would sight a tree strong enough to climb in case they saw a hog. This particular day Walter did not do a good job of staying close to a sturdy tree and a hog came after him. All he had was a sapling to climb. When he climbed it the higher he would get the more it would bend to the ground. He finally wrapped his legs and arms around the sappling and hung tight. The hog nipped at his behind but the dogs distracted the hog before it did any damage to his back side. Daddy (Carl Whittaker) was a farmer until I (Barbara Jane Whittaker) was about 8 or 10 years old--then he sold his farm and I don't know how he came about owning the farm--it may have been part of Grandpa's (Tom Whittaker) farm. He sold the farm and went into the meat business with his brother, Walter. They had a meat market in Walnut Ridge(I went by and make a picture while there in July 1996). The name Whittaker Bro's was still on the windows until a few years ago. They built a slaughter house out on highway 63 between Hoxie and Sedgwick. Daddy (Carl) ran the slaughter house and Walter ran the Meat Market in town. That way they didn't get in each others way much. They did have their disagreements. Then Daddy sold his interest out to Walter--I think. Any way Daddy (Carl) went back to farming. He was into farming until about 1960, when he went into construction. He worked in construction until he retired in 1978. He was only retired for about 6 months when he found out he had leukemia. The leukemia went into remission after he had the chemo, but came back in 1982. SS# 430-34-5003
