a. Note:   Ruby Canterbury and John Mullen were on the 1930 Lawrence County AR census Ashland Township Roll 80 Book 2 , Page 10. Carrie Guess was living with Ruby and John but Allie and Amy are not listed...John was listed as age 54, Ruby age 26 and Carrie age 54. Birthdays Ruby Mullen and her sister, Allie Whittaker, both of Trumann, celebrated their birthdays recently at the Trumann Civic Center. Ruby will be 98 and Allie will be 84. Guests were served a meal and birthday cake with iced tea and colas. Out--of-town guests were from Versailles, Lee's Summit, pleasant hill and Manchester, MO., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Southaven, Miss., Grand Saline and Rickwall, Texas, Paragould, Harrisburg, Warren, Marrion, Lake City, Fisher, Black Rock, Jonesboro and Trumann. (The Jonesboro Sun, Jonesboro, AR July 22, 2001) This is the article that the Jonesboro Sun ran in the paper....it is nothing like what I sent to them to run in the paper, they edited the article and then added some things that I did not have in the article...i.e. we did not serve iced tea....don't where that came from) MULLEN, WHITTAKER Celebrate Birthdays Ruby Mullen and Allie Whittaker, who are sisters, celebrated their birthdays together June 16 at the Trumann Civic Center, hosted by their families. Ruby was celebrating her 98th birthday and Allie was celebrating her 84th. Ruby is the daughter of the late Alvin & Carrie (Doyle) Canterburry, and Allie is the daughter of the late James & Carrie (Doyle) Canterburry Guess. They are former Lawrence County residents. The guests enjoyed a potluck meal and cake. Those attending included : Don and Leona Drew of Versailles, MO., Phil and Michele Belcher and Ashley of Lee's Summit, MO., Jim & Barbara (Whittaker) Brown of Manchester, MO., Jim Brown, Jr. and Michelle of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., Tom and Christina Brown of Pleasant Hill, MO., Earl and Ruby (Drew) Johnson of Southaven, Miss., Neil Whittaker and grandson, Kylen Whittaker of Jonesboro, Ruby (Whittaker) Couch, Melonda Goodson, and Richard Hayes, all of Paragould, Carla (Whittaker) Benson and Melinda Brown both of Harrisburg, Kevin and Tonya Thornton and Kailey of Warren, Garvin & Jean Pulley & Danny & Dalvin of Grand Saline, Texas, Natosha Pulley and Bridgett Weaver, both of Rickwall, Texas, Brain McElyea of Marion, Philip and Debbie Heckmann and Kaitlyn and Lindsey of Lake City, Mel and Lesa Poisso and Alex and Anna of Fisher, Grover and Wanda Mullen and Lynne of Black Rock, and Carolyn (Drew) Wilson, Dan and Shelia Drew, Karen Smith, Tosha and Michelle, Sharon (Drew) Hayes, Jim Robbins, Judy Lee, Betty Terrell, Betty Hennesey and Betty Trusty, all of Trumann. Allie Guess Whittaker, 85 of Trumann, died Nov. 15, 2002, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro. Bron Aug. 19, 1917 at Minturn, she was the daughter of James and Carrie Belle Doyle Guess. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Lawrence County before moving to Trumann in 1994. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Whittaker; and three sisters, Amy Drew, Zona Mullen and May Canterberry. Survivors include a son, Neil Whittaker, Jonesboro; three daughter, Barbara Brown, Manchester, MO., Ruby Couch, Paragould, and Carla Benson, Harrisburg; a sister, Ruby Mullen, Trumann; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Brown, Tom Brown, Michael Whittaker, Luann Jones, Dina Jeffers, Lesa Poisso, Melinda Brown and Tonya Thornton; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral was Nov. 17 in the Roller-Farmers Union Chapel with Rev. Jerry Jolly officiating. Burial was in Pine Log Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tom Brown, Jimmy Brown, Mel Poisso, David Jeffers, John Benson and J.R. Brown Sr. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Whittaker, Kevin Thornton, Tom Jones, Don Drew, Danny Drew, Jim Robbins and Earl Johnson. (The Times Dispatch, Walnut Ridge, AR.,Lawrence County, December 04, 2002) Some memories I have of Mom (Allie) 1. Mom (Allie), of course, did all of the laundry with a scrub board for many years. With 4 small children and a husband this was very hard work. Doing the laundry would be a full time job. The first washing machine she had was the old wringer type and if remember correctly it was kept outside. The slacks, pants & jeans, Mom would starch and then put on a wire type strecther and hang out to dry and there would be no need to iron.
