Elizabeth Whittaker was married to someone name, Cook, but could only find the one name of Cook. And Laura Belle Crow, they had six children, Pearl Jane Whittaker, Nora Whittaker, Thomas Henry Whittaker, Maude Whittaker, Esther Francis Whittaker, Burton Whittaker. Virgle Manning Historical comment. THE FEUD: Zack Manning and John Whittaker went to court over who owned hogs running wild in the woods east of Hoxie, Arkansas. Zack won, so a feud developed. Later, Virgle and Esther married. Virgle was Zack's son, and Esther was John's daughter, so the feud ended, when Zack wanted to see their first baby (this was Floyd, about 1915) and it occurred at a picnic in Sedgwick, about 10 miles east of Hoxie. Floyd was born in 1913. John later took Floyd to his orchard and let him eat plums, seed and all,.....Floyd nearly died. John is buried in Whittaker Cemetery. Howard and Viola Meadows knows location. Note: There are several court records in reference to John Whittaker having disputes with other people, other than Zack Manning over ownership of hogs........... Birth day and marriage date...does not = correct age? Marriage lic: John was 33 when he was married in 1884 but date grave marker has 1845 -1920? We (Cecil Meadows) lived on a 40-acre farm owned by my Grandpa Whittaker. It was the east-40 of a 120-acre farm acquired by John Whittaker when he moved to Arkansas. Uncle Tom Whittaker, my mothers oldest brother, and his family occupied the west 40. My Grandpa Whittaker farmed the middle 40-acres - mostly by his family, as he was too old and rheumatic to work. The 40-acres on which we lived was of white clay nature with a sandy loam ridge running diagonally through it. (Source: Cecil Meadows: With His Help: Autobiography by Cecil Meadows) On the 1910 census in Lawrence County, AR Promisland Township Tom and Maud Whittaker with Marie is listed as house #29. John Whittaker with Maud, Ester and Bert are listed as house #30 and Burton and Pearl Whittaker Meadows with Roy, Cecil, Ruth and Edith are listed as house #31. Found this information today at St. Louis County Library. Barbara Whittaker Brown. February 24, 2001. Oh my goodness, so many names from our research are on that one piece that you sent. William Shrum was the husband of Amanda Dollar, who died young, probably in the birth of her second child by Wm Shrum. The oldest was Thomas Jefferson Shrum, aka Jeff, and the 2nd, Melvina Shrum who was the first wife of Samuel Jackson Lamb. James Dollar, brother to these Dollar girls, was also married and living in Lawrence Co and he too died very young, and had one child, Elizabeth, (Lizzie) who was the 2nd wife of Sam J Lamb. Here is what I have on the next person that I am familiar with : NUTT, MARTIN V. Spouse: TANNEHILL, R. J. Marriage Date: 6 May 1860 County: Lawrence State: AR Living in HH of Thomas Tannehilll age 24, Minerva , age 19, Sarah age 3, and Mack age 21, in 1860 Cache Township Lawrence Co living next door to the Freeman's. Martin is newly married to Rebecca Tannehill, June 16, 1860. In 1850 Martin VB Nutt is living with Eli Huffstetler family is 11 years old. Martin Nutt also died before 1880, and had just applied for a permit to operate a ferry in the county. The Tannehill's figure in closely with the Lamb's as they are living next to Nathan Lamb in Jackson Co, and I suspect due to county formations, these folks are enumerated in Lawrence, Cache Township in later years. Perin Lamb found in that same area, same years, married a Tannehill also, Elizabeth in Jackson Co before they are found in Lawrence Co. My notes on this bunch: Rebecca Tannehill Nutt later married Robert H. Neeley, on the 4th of September, 1879. It is tradition in northeast Arkansas that Rebecca and Martin did not live together for a number of years prior to his death and a child was born during that time and was reared by Mr. Neeley. He went by Nutt and for future family historians was Thomas Jefferson Nutt. Found in Craighead Co 1880..7 years old. Next on your list of names, I see C A Freeman. Charles Adam Freeman was the son of Green Freeman and Rachel Nutt. C A Nutt first married Martha Ellis, by whom he had four children and it is believed she died in childbirth with the youngest, in 1879. He then married Jencie C Cook, 30 Oct 1879, a who is the daughter of John and Mary Cook, who are also the parents of James Harrison Cook, was married Elizabeth Whittaker Fry, after his wife Dovie Rebecca Lamb died. ( I have also found records in Missouri that the father of these Freeman's was charged with rape , think it was Dunklin Co) and they moved to Illinois where some of the children were born, and I found them in census records in Illinois. By 1860 I find that the parents of these three Nutt children, Caoline, another son named Green after his father, and Martin Van Buren Nutt have died and they are living next door to the Tannehill's with the HH of household being a young child, Caroline. ( she was the second oldest living child beides Martin who had recently married Rebecca Tannehill) Caroline later married James Gleghorn. Their youngest son, Ben, married the daughter of my Green Cook and 4th wife Emma Clift. My husband's cousin is married to a Nutt (I am sure my husband would tell you he is married to a NUT also but that is another story, for another day:-) and I am sure she must be from this Nutt family because they lived in this same area...Barb Thanks girl, that is a big help, seems this Thomas M Cook ( my records show him as Thomas M Cook) must have been a law officer? the way I read the last post you sent. Do you have a date for that? The reason I ask, we have lost this Thomas M Cook, after he married the Cardwell girl and received her inhertitance, he lives in another Cook HH, after that..no wife, no children, natta! As for the Nutt girl, gimme some names, cause the Nutt's and Dollars are connected..are we sisters yet? Here are some notes from a fella Cook researcher on this dude: Living with Uncle, G W Cook and wife Sarah in 1870, Greene Co Salem Township age 21 yrs old, with land assets of $ 100...possibly inherited from Henry who has died. also living there is brother, John W Cook, age 20..their father was Henry and mother was Hannah "I have been fumbling in and over my Cook files tonight and was questioning why Thomas was in the HH of Geo W without his wf Mary...they would have been almost newlyweds. One of the receipts of the estate confirming that Mary (her mark) Cook had received from George W. Cook the sum of $277.13 and is also signed by Thomas M. Cook. This receipt is dated August 10, 1867...Thomas M. Cook and Mary E.Cardwell were married July 20 1867..Thomas M. was 19 years old and Mary E. Cardwell was 21, both of Lawrence Co. The JP who md them was A. B. Israel. So, Thomas was born 1848/49 and Mary E. 1846 Could Jane Cardwell be Rebecca Cardwell? Could these Jane and Mary be nieces of this George Cardwell..the records don't indicate any relationships..only states Jane Cardwell, Mary Cardwell, and James C. Cook are heirs. No ages of the heirs are shown." FL No, I don't have any records that list either Rebecca, Jane, or Mary as daughters of George Cardwell. The receipts for $277.13 to each of these heirs is shown as: "Received of George W. Cook two hundred and seventy seven dollars and thirteen cents as administrator of George Cardwell Estate Deceased this August the 10th 1867." Signed: Rebecca (her mark) Cardwell Attest: J. M. Edwards and Signed: Thomas M. Cook Mary (her mark) Cook Attest: J. M. Edwards The only other time the heirs are mentioned by name is in the record of "George W. Cook applying for Letters of Administration upon the estate of George Cardwell; that the names of the heirs are Janie Cardwell, Mary M. Cardwell, and James C. Cook, all residents of Greene County, Arkansas." Note fel: By the time the funds were disbursed, Mary and Thomas M. Cook were just married, hence, his signature and Mary's mark. The name Rebecca is shown one time and also the name "Janie". There is no "Janie" signature. Hi Nelda, I also have Thomas H. Cook as son of Henry and Martha Cook....and John Thomas Cook (21 Feb 1884-16 Dec 1945) buried in Oak Ridge, survived by a son, Vernie; a brother William; and sisters Mary Estes (wf of James W. Estes), Lonie and Mattie Cook...so John Thomas Cook would be son of Thomas H. and Mary Ellen (Thomas) Cook. Henry Jessie Cook is also buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery and G'pa preached his funeral....his records show his birthdate as 10 July 1882; died 10 Nov 1921 at age 39 years and 4 months old. G'pa's handwriting is very clear. His tombstone was probably a concrete slab with dates hard to decifer after all these years so whoever inventoried the cemetery probably couldn't make out the dates....I would think the draft record would be correct. I believe the Henry Cook md to Hannah is brother of my George W...I think the Thomas in G. W. Cook's HH in 1870 is Thomas M. Cook not Thomas H. Cook married to Mary Ellen (Thomas) Cook. Hope I haven't confused either one of us.....I'm still poking around in my Sanderson files.....does the above info help? Could this Martha A. Frye be John Whittaker's first wife. I have some information from a early Whittaker/Manning researcher that has John's wivies confused... has Laura Conrey as first wife and that is not correct...Laura Whittaker was John's first daughter that married William Conrey. I don't have any source for Laura Whittaker's mother...I have Laura Whittaker Conrey death cert and her mother is listed as Unknown. This early researcher has Elisa Frye/Fry listed as John's second wife. John's second wife is Annie Clemons...I have a marriage cert for John and Annie. They had one daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Whittaker. The early researcher has Martha Bell Crow as third wife.
