Whittaker/Meadows/Manning Connections Evelyn McAnelly - Jul 1, 2003 View | Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item After pouring over this Whittaker family tree, I have a question and an observation. The question - how were Maude Manning (wife of Tom Whittaker) and Virgil Manning (husband of Esther Whittker) related? Siblings? Cousins? And the observation - cousins Pearl Jane Whittaker (John's daughter) and Martha Ann Whittaker (Thomas's daughter) married Meadows brothers. Pearl married Burton and Martha Ann married Robert (Bob). I had an interesting visit with Aunt Esther and Uncle Virgil sometime back in the 70s, I guess, and Aunt Esther showed me a studio photo of Martha Ann (Aunt Esther called her "Marthie Ann") and Robert Meadows with their daughter Stella, who must have been no more than 2 years old at the time. With them were Bob's older sister Iola and her son Ralph, about 4 or 5, maybe. Iola's husband had left her and their son, so the two of them were included in the photo. The thing that caught my eye was the brush on the floor by Uncle Bob's foot. He was sitting in a chair and Ralph was leaning against his leg. I tried to imagine what had taken place just before the picture was snapped. Someone got the last swipe with the brush, and I'll bet it was Ralph. Then Uncle Bob must have put the brush on the floor and out of sight (or so he thought). All of a sudden the whole picture came to life for me. Those weren't just people sitting stiffly for a portrait, they were living human beings, related to me. I was enchanted by the picture and raved over it so much that Aunt Esther gave it to me. That was not my intention, but when it was offered, I gratefully took it. Eventually, I had it professionally copied and enlarged. Again, I was amazed by what the picture showed me. The wrinkles on Martha Ann's dress reminded me of the ironing that ladies of that day had to do with those heavy old iron irons. It must have taken forever to iron just one long full-skirted dress like she was wearing. Also, the enlargement showed her hands were covered with warts. That must explain some skin conditions that I have inherited from my dad - must have come through the Whittaker line. Nowadays, we can do something about warts and such, but back then, warts must have been a pain. Often I hear my dad say how much he would like to see his mother (Pearl Jane Whittaker) now and how he would like to show her the modern household conveniences of today. He says he doesn't know how she did it - raising 12 children back in those days without the things we have now. We have so much that we so often take for granted. But sometimes we are lucky enough to be reminded so that we can remember how lucky we are to be living in this day and time. I keep that picture of Martha and Bob with his sister and the kids in a frame on the wall to remind me. I'll post it for you to see. Oops, I started out with the intention of finding out the various ways the Whittakers, Meadows and Manning families are connected, but kinda got off track. If you can think of any more in addition to the connections above, please add them, and if you know how Maude and Virgil are related, please tell. On the 1910 census in Lawrence County, AR Promisland Township Tom and Maud Whittaker with Marie is listed as house #29. John Whittaker with Maud, Ester and Bert are listed as house #30 and Burton and Pearl Whittaker Meadows with Roy, Cecil, Ruth and Edith are listed as house #3
