Central Daylight Time From: [email protected]@whitaker1750.fsnet.co.uk Reply To: To: [email protected]@aol.com Hello Barbara Sorry, no Telemachus in my family - I'm descended from George Whitaker of Ossett, Yorkshire who was born in 1754. Popular names in this tree are George, Mark and Anthony. Telemachus is a Classical Greek name, so it was probably reused in the 18th century; your ancestors may have migrated long before that. According to the Couch DNA site, there are two mutational differences between our DNA (in the 25 results back so far), so there is a connection, but probably not as close as that to Weldon Whitaker who is identical to me in the 25 bases tested. My brother Neil Whittaker did the test for our Whittaker line. FTMDNA informs me that our Whitaker/Whittakers has a match. My line is Telemachus Whittaker also other spellings of Talmachus Whitaker. Telemachus was born in USA, KY but family history tells me my Whittakers came from Yorkshire....I have never been able to back further than Telemachus line...would be interested to know if the name Talamachu/Telemachus is in your family. James Whitaker b. 1721 s/o Mark & Elizabeth Empson Whitaker. James had a son Alexander b. 1744 (no documentary on him). Alexander had a son Telemachus b. abt. 1760 who had a son Alexander b. abt 1790 who married Elizabeth "Betsy" Underwood and they had your Telemachus Whittaker b. 1820. The above Teles could be the Telemachus b. abt. 1760? Can't think of any other name that Teles could stand for. James's (b. 1721) children came to KY. Either up by Lexington (Madison, Muhleburg, Logan counties) or to Pulaski, Laurel counties in the south east. Claudia Whittaker's were in Hoxie, Arkansas by 1847. There is a probate record in the court house in Lawrence County, when Telemachus Whittaker die And another record where Bud Whittaker, minor son of Telemachus Whittak was trying to get control of his share of the land.(Source Bill Couch) Bill Couch said, all the recorded he viewed, Telemachus was spelled different on each one, but this was the spelling on the probate record. Telemachus had another wife before Mary Ann, will probably find in Missouri. Probably died giving birth to Josiah 1849. He married Mary Ann Hillers on October 26, 1849 at A2-237, by Andrew Darter, Lawrence County, Arkansas. Mary Ann born on September 05, 1832 in Illinois; died on July 18, 1900 in Hoxie, Arkansas, buried at Whittaker Cemetery, Lawrence County, Arkansas. Vickie Manning Carmichael has Telemachus DOB 1823 This info from Alice Faye Whittaker: The cemetary marker has 1820 on it for Telemachus. The U.S. census records indicate that he was born around 1822 except for one of them that does indicate 1828. His marriage license states he was twenty five when he married Mary Hillers in 1849. She thinks the most accurate date of birth would be 1822 or 1823. I was at Whittaker Cemetery on 7-5-96--the marker on Telemachus has 1820 as date of birth.( Source: Barbara Whittaker Brown) There was a new marker on Telemachus grave. Betsey C. may be his mother and Elizabeth one of his brothers wife and children. 1850 cencus has Whittaker on page 363 and 371, Black Rock township 1850 census they were in the Black River township and that is where they were married. That is probably where his first wife is buried.(Bill Couch) Try to find out where the MG, Meth Epis Ch. is -- this is where Thomas of 1830 was married. Sarah E. 1 AR. 137-185-194 This was the next house on the census after Telemachus Need to try to find this one on the 1850 census to see who here husband was--they were in Arkansas in 1850 1860 Cache Township for Telemachus Whittaker. In Greek mythology there is a Telemachus. -- he was the son of Odysseus and Penelope who helped his father kill Penelope's suitors.(Info from Lesa Smith Walter) In KY, some records prior to 1790 will be found as part of Virginia's records. I did not find a Julia Whittaker on the 1870 census, ??? suppose to be a dau. of Telemachus and Mary Ann born1866??? Julia A. Whittaker is the dau of Thomas H. Whittaker and Elizabeth. Got a question for you..on the 1870 Cache Township Lawrence Co, there are the Whitaker, Whittington, Cardwell familes, all living on same page ( dont' you know that was crowded if you lived on a "page"?) Anywho there is a Mary McLean recently married in the Whittington HH..she was married in May, census date was August 15, of that year.( see column 14 of 1870 census) Is she a Whittington, Whittaker or would you know? She appears to be 17 years old, and living with Thomas and George Whittington, perhaps brothers and sisters judging from their ages. I am so bumfuzzled over my Cardwell's and their relationships, had one of them "pegged" and up jumped Mr. Doubt..and sho nough proved myself wrong again! If you read the column headings there appear to be only 4 land owners on that page, Thomas Whitaker, Telemaus Whittaker, Robert M Nutt, and the Cardwell girls, Jane and Mary, land valued at $ 600 while Thomas Whitaker has $ 800 in real estate, Telemaus Whitaker has $ 2,000, and Robert M Nutt has $ 200 in real estate. I will assume that the others on this page are share croppers, etc living or possibly working for wages and living on someone else's land. Some have more value in personal assets than in land. Since this is the first census after the Civil War, and the slaves are free folks now, as opposed to 1860 when slaves were considered to be very valuable assets, I'm wondering what the assets were that was so valuable for Robert McCowan Nutt, age 42, and his young wife, Jane age 23. Ditto for your Tele Whittaker..was he an extensive land owner? (from COWMUD) Barb, this may be old news but i found Eliza J. Husky's parents. in lawrence co. 1850 census black river twn. # 376 was Wm. Husky 30 from Mo. Caroline Husky 19. wife. Eliza J. Husky 3 ark . In 1860 cache twn .Eliza J. Husky was in the house hold with Talimancus Whittaker and family.she was 13 them. Barb, i am going to try and find Rebecca Lucretta Green and Eliza C. Whittaker. (march 2003) Barb, The following is some information about an Alexander Whitaker who I can connect my family to. He would be too old to be the father of your Telemachus or Thomas H. but might be their grandfather.
