Central Daylight Time, WhitBJ39 writes: Dave, Do you know of a John Whittaker taking his own life...lived in Walnut Ridge, AR...Pat, my cousin that died in Jan. Told me once that our great-grandfather, John Whittaker had taken his life...lived in that white house in Walnut Ridge, where Uncle Walter lived later...Pat said, she remembered when it happened...Pat & I are the age, but i do not remember the inscident ... as I told her, it could not have been our great-grandfather because he died somewhere between 1917 and 1920....but I have been think lately maybe it was one of the other John Whittakers...maybe Alice would know. Barb Barb, Yes, I do know something about this incident. I had forgotten all about it. That John Whittaker was most likely John Henry Whittaker. John Henry was the grandfather of Jannie. I am not sure she even knows about this!! The story Alice heard from her father was that it was an accident - John Henry was cleaning a gun when it discharged. It happened on May 23, 1949, so Jannie was only 3 years old. I am not certain if Ella Mae ever told her. After John Curtis died, his wife, Gusta (Hunt) - sister of Ada Hunt Whittaker, Alice's step-grandmother, sold the house and went to California to live near or with her son, Curtis Whitaker. She died Nov. 6, 1973 in Duarte, CA, but her body was brought back to WR to be buried in Whittaker Cemetery next to her husband. This is the reason, I suspect, that Ella Mae would not come back to visit Arkansas very much. When you go to Arkansas, this might be something to research a little. I don't know if this is something you should make public, though. -- at least until we know how Jannie will react. Dave
