Note: This line is written about in the excellent book, "Whitaker, Reed, Harper, Wright" privately published by Bruce Whitaker in 1989. Last address I have for Bruce is 661 Old Fort Road, Fairview, NC. 28730. It is also possible your Lewis Henry Whitaker's grandfather was Israel Alford Whitaker, b: Feb. 6, 1765, uncle to the Whitaker, Alexander (Maryland & Delaware Revolutionary patriots, 1775-1783 Military Records) Listed in: Montgomery County, Maryland Page number: 350 Whitaker, Alexander (b.1746) Private, 8th co., Militia, aug. 30 1777. Lived in Sugarland Hd. in 1776 and had four taxables in 1777) Whitaker, Alexander Listed in: Frederick County, Maryland Page number: 389 Think these are the same Alexander Whitaker/Whittaker listed in Maryland & Delaware Revolutionary Patriots. Sugarland hundered. Appointed by the committee of Correspondence to solicit subscriptions in 117 to purchase arms and ammunition (ref;I-86). Gave money in the amount of 1 lb. 17sh. 6 p. for arms and ammunition for the militia in 1775 (ref;E-62)(July2003 found in genealogy.com Maryland & Delware Revolutionary Partiots, 177501783 Military Records) This information for Alexander Whittaker and Elizabeth Underwood is not confirmed except there is a marriage for them in KY and there is a Alexader Whitaker in Hickman County KY census also had two sons that were about the same ages for Telemachus and Thomas H....this is just a theory.... . This Alexander & Elizabeth Whittker also were listed on the 1830 census in the Paudach KY area. Lost them from that point. These Whittakers were following a path that I believed our Whittakers traveled....if they went to MO from Ky...have never been able to locate in MO.??? There was a Telemachus/Talmachus Underwood living a few houses from our Betsey Whittaker on the 1850 Arkansas census. I do believe there is a connection between the Telemachus Whittaker and Telemachus Underwood...?? Whittaker: There was also a Thomas Whittaker in Lawrence County Arkansas on the 1830 census according to a entry in the marriage records above Telemachus and Mary Ann, of Whiticer (?)(should that be Whittaker) Thomas and Petty Cravens, March 18, 1827 by Isaac Brookfield MG, Meth Epis Ch, A1-12 (1830 census, Lawrence Co., Thomas Whitaker) (Source Bill Couch) Whitaker, Abraham - KY Jefferson County - 1789 Census type code tax list ( I have not been able to link, Abraham, Acquilla and Martha with Telemachus's Whittakers) Whitaker, Acquilla - Ky Jefferson County - 1789 Census type code tax list Whitaker, Martha - Ky Jefferson County - 1789 Census type code tax list We finally heard from Mildred. The envelope was dated the 13th and we got it on the 15th. Wow - I didn't think our mail service could be that fast. Takes longer than that for a letter to get from my house to Sioux City and that is only 15 miles away. The mailman must have known I was waiting for that letter <smile>. She wrote a nice long letter, but I will pass on only parts of it - relating to our research. Mildred has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California and majored in English. She is married to William Griffith and they have three children, three grand children and two great grandchildren. I do have some info on her children. They are William Thomas Griffith born 29-May-1952, Cheryl LeAnn Griffith born 8-Aug-1953, and Susan Lovitta Griffith born 29-Jul-1960 in the Phillipines. Susan is married to (I am not real positive on the spelling) Louwellen Jones. This is all the info I have on Mildred's family so far. Hope to get the rest soon. Mildred says "I know the Whittakers were English, I think originally from Yorkshire. They knew how to breed thorough-bred horses and wanted to get some of the blue grass land in Kentucky, but were too late. The English Royals had all of it. They made sure of that before they let the common people know it existed. The queen has a stable in Lexington now and comes for the races as a private citizen." "Talamachus was my dad's grandfather and the story I heard is that his father went on west to Paducha (Kentucky) and established a stable. Talamachus was engaged and his fiance was killed in a riding accident. He left (Paducha) and came to Arkansas. After some time it seems he recovered and married. I hear twice, but Eddie Conley (I think she must mean Eddie Conrey) told me he married three times and each of his wives died. Eddie was a 1/2 cousin. My dad was named Tal Andrew in his memory. My dad was born in 1890." (I need to confirm this as the records I have say he was born in 1889 - pretty close though) I have left out some parts here --- "My uncle Jeff was the oldest. His name was Thomas Jefferson. Uncle John was next. His name was John Henry. Next in order was aunt Martha Ann, (she said in the letter that Martha Ann told her about the family) and then Uncle Max , then my dad. Everyone called him Jack. Next was Charles who died as a child and then Aunt Effie. My grandfather (Thomas William Whittaker) said that Tal and Charles were wild just like his two mules -Jack and Pete- and so that is what he called them. Everyone in Arkansas called my dad Jack. The kids called him uncle Jack - so the name stuck." (For those who asked about Jack & Pete - there is your answer - Jack was Tal and Pete was Charles - nick-named after Thomas William's mules <smile>.) Mildred also said in the letter that her son was a computer programer. She has a new computer and is learning how to use it. Her son helps her, but he has a full time job and can "spare only so much time for his mom". She also said "I have been writing the family stories that my grandmother told my mother and my mother told me. I am beginning to feel a little rushed because I think I may be the last of the Whittakers who knows them." She said in another part of the letter "My uncle Max was said to have a club foot. When I saw him, I looked, but couldn't tell. So it wasn't very bad, but he was excused from a lot of work when they were growing up." That is about all she wrote in this letter. I, for one, am really looking forward to more. When we write back to her, I will ask if she knows anything about a brother to Talamachus. If Talamachus' father owned a stable in Paducha, there surely must be some kind of records someplace. Our first real clue!!!!!! I feel we are getting a whole lot closer to going back one more generation. Dave (Source: David Marotz, date about 1998) It looks like we now have a group that is following each other and My Rice line is in the middle. But I got the name of the Gills wrong It was Purdence instead of Pricilla. Just went back and checked the file at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hichris&id=I275 Also got another message from Weldon. I will send it in the next message. Now I have a Chart up for Mark and Catherine Teague. I have a very large file on the Teague family and also on the Welborn family. Seem like they connected to some other kin of mine back in the BBS days. And both of them went through Muhlenburg Co. and is connected to my Rice line I think this Weldon Whitaker has done lots of Research. and The Teague and Welborn line was also in Rowan Co. Nc. Bill Couch(Feb. 2003) Here is what I do know. We have a Edward Teague He had a Daughter or Grandaughter forget which that married Mark Whitaker. We have a James Welborn and Isbale Teague who is also a descendant of Edward Teague. James And Isabele ended up in Muhlenburg Co. Ky. Now if Mark had a son name James and if that James that Married Pricilla Gills is the father to a James, Alexander and Giles Whitaker and was also in Muhlenburg Co. Ky. My Rice line is also intermarried with the Teague and Welborn line. Both the Welborn and Rice line went to Stoddard Co. Missouri. I think that Barb has some kind of record that indicate that Thomas Whitaker may have been in Popular Bluff Mo before comeing to Arkansas and Popular Bluff and Stoddard Co. Mo are next to each other. Looks like (Barb, you had better get busy and prove some of this)<grin> And as you can see on World Connect, some researchers have it that way, If you go through all of them. Bill CouchThis is from our new Whittaker DNA member Looks like it is a good chance that all three of you will match. The Frist Robert is from Mark Whittaker, Weldon line see to also be from Mark and look who he think he is kin to. Bill --------------- A James and a Alexander Whiteaker lived in Muhlenberg Co., KY in the 1790's, 1800's and 1810's. A will was recorded for James in 1816 in Ohio Co., KY (next to Muhlenberg Co.). The will names Alexander as his brother and is witnessed by Rice Whitaker and Nathaniel Grigsby. Rice Whitaker was a son of my Giles and Nathaniel Grigsby was a son-in-law of my Giles. The Rev. War record for Alexander Whitaker tells that he went to Alexander Co., IL in 1821 from Muhlenberg Co., KY and that he had entered the Rev War from Rowan Co., NC. My Giles had to be related to Alexander and James and was probably a brother. It also connects Giles to old Rowan Co., NC. Weldon Whiteaker Ok I am sending this message so Barb Whitaker and Robert Whitaker will know you are also on the DNA project. and your name will be Added to this page. http://www.couchgenweb.com/whitaker/ This is one reason I would like to get enough to make a family Chart showing your connection. Then if results come back and tell that your familiy is connected. Then you can go to work trying to find that connection. Click on his name. I think this line is back far enough or at least I have it in my data base to start to link up lots of these Whitaker. Bob Carter just sent me his file and it also connect to the same line. Between those two and what I have captured from the net. thing are looking like they all will connect together. That is if I don't get too confused. At least this is getting interesting. The two Chart I have at the botton of the DNA project are Whitaker chart and One of them also connect to my Hitchcock line in Maryland. These Whitakers sure did intermarry a lots. It will be hard to get all of them in order.
