Ella Mae Whittaker, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Whittaker of Walnut Ridge, AR, has enlisted in the nursing corps of the United States Navy. The Y.W.A. girls of the Baptist Church and their counselor, Mrs. Glover Rice, assisted by Mrs. Everett Dodd, are enjoying camping at Current River Beach. Those who are on the outing are: Naomi Agnew, Ella Mae Whittaker, Opal Doss and Edith Whittaker. Mabel Lois Bush will join them in the latter part of the week. Ella Mae Whitaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Whittaker of Walnut Ridge, has enlisted in the nursing corps of the United States Navy. She has the rank of ensign and is at present on duty at the great Lakes, ILL., hospital. (Source: The Times Dispatch, Walnut Ridge, Ar., Feb. 26, 2003) James married Ella Mae Whitaker (#1565) on July 19, 1945 in Long Beach, California. Ella Mae, daughter of John Henry Whitaker (#1554) and Gusta Elizabeth Hunt (#1555), was born January 6, 1920 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. She died September 18, 2002 in Sedona, Arizona at 82 years of age and was buried September 21, 2002 in Sedona Cemetery, Sedona, Arizona. Ella Mae did her nurses training in Memphis, Tennessee and enlisted in the Navy Nurses Corp to serve in World War II. She was inducted on February 7, 1943. At the end of the war, she was stationed at the hospital on Guadalcanal where she was one of the first 50 nurses. Then she was stationed in California, where she met James. She was discharged on November 17, 1945. After she and James were married, she worked in the hospital while James finished law school at the University of Arizona. After he graduated, they returned to Flagstaff, Arizona and she worked in the Flagstaff Hospital. During the Korean War, they went to Camp Pendelton for a brief period and then went to Sedonia, Arizona where she worked as her husband's secretary in his law firm until his death. Ella Mae enjoyed traveling and traveled quite extensively with friends and relatives. (Source: David Martoz files)
