There was a sink (running water piped from cave up the hollow) where she washed her feet. Her dress and apron always came all the way to the ground. She wore a big bun. House had been built by Joshua's grandfather (John J. Tipton, Sr., 1800-1867). It had a parlor, a dining room, a screened-in kitchen, and had 3 bedrooms upstairs. There was a flap door in back which lined up with the door in front. It was possible to pull an 8' log up to the back, then pull it into the house via chain (and mule?) going out the front. Two of these logs would last a winter. The house faced west. the two big rooms downstairs (dining and sitting) were 20 x 20 feet. There was also a screened-in kitchen (was this different from the summer kitchen?) Upstairs were 3 bedrooms. The house had a front porch (north side), side porch on west side, and a back stoop. Outside next to the creek was a big iron kettle, 3 feet in diameter, where Clara made soap. Across the creek to the west was first the blacksmith shop and then the barn. There was a stile on the north fence (north of house or north of barn?). The house burned in 1936. Ruford Oswell Tipton was at home from college and was in an attached shed/room cleaning paintbrushes when a leaky flue tile (stove pipe?) leaked hot flue gases. The attic was over the dining room, and the family antiques were up there. Elva cried when he thought about the little chair his grandfather (John J. Tipton, Jr., 1833?-1880, a Civil War veteran) had made for him when he was small. The house was 3 logs thick and burned for two days and two nights.
