During the American Revolution, 'deaf John' Barnes finally picked up his hunting rifle & let a few "red coats" have it after they started to trespass on his farm. By doing so, he gave up all rights to "The Friends" or Quakers, who don't believe in any violence or military. Whether or not he then became a volunteer soldier isn't clear, except some stories claim he got too close to a cannon when it went off, bursting both of his ear drums. Towards the end of the conflict (although it took years for it to completely settle down.), his brother 'handsome Jim' Barnes decided that they should build a large log cabin w/a "dog trot" in the middle & finish raising their families together so that Jim could be John's ears. They say 'handsome Jim' feared for 'deaf John' since he lost his hearing. It has also been said that the locals living in the same area didn't know which child belonged to which man, because they all lived together in one dwelling place. From: Mary Lou Zimmerman: John "Deaf" Barnes was the executor of Brinsley Barnes, Sr. will, May 7, 1795, Wilkes Col, NC. Military: Beg 26 May 1773 enlisted in Thomas Clarke's Company, First Carolina Battalion. Note: Colonial Records v.XV p 718 (per Brenda Whittaker, Robert E Barnes). Military 2: Beg Oct 1, 1776 Gunner in Capt. Kingsbury's Company. Artillery; promoted to Sergeant in 1779. Note: Colonial Records v>XVI p 1196 (Ber Brenda Whittaker & Robert E Barnes) From Mick Barnes: The name John was obtained from various unconfirmed/ undocumented genealogy files as well as from land deed transactions between John Barnes and his father, immigrant Brinsley Barnes, in Chatham County, NC and also the sale of the same land in 1791 between John Barnes and his nephew John Carter, a confirmed son of Samuel & Mary BARNES Carter. The date of birth is an estimated date based on the confirmed birth date of his sisters, Mary and Anne, and the marriage date between John and Ruth FISHER Barnes. Similarly, the place of birth of John Barnes is guessed as being Chester County P A since his parents were known to be living there during that period of time. Other circumstantial information agrees with those estimates. The marriage records of Swedes Church, Philadelphia, PA lists the marriage of John to Ruth next to the marriage of his brother James to Sarah. 1772 Militia Roll records for Chatham County, NC lists John in among his brothers, namely James, Brinsley II, Thomas and Jehu. John was involved in the legal court battle along with his brother Brinsley II against their brother Jehu over the settling of the estate after the death of their father in 1794. The date of death is estimated from the Last Will & Testament of John Barnes, February Term 1822 Wilkes County, NC. The names of the children of John & Ruth for my descendant records for immigrant Brinsley & wife Elizabeth were extracted from the Will of John. A son named Brisnley was included among the children of John & Ruth in the Will of John.
