Forrest E Witt wrote the following; The earlies know record of the Witt family in Polk Coungty, Missouri, is that Nathan Witt obtained title to a tract of land, containing eighty acres, from the United States of America by Pre-emption Certificate No. 639 April 10, 1843 Nathan and his wife, Nancy Hendricks, were both born in Kentucky; and they were married there, moving to Missouri a short time later. According to the 1850 census, Milton Witt was twnety six years old at that time, making him forn about 1824. From a D.A.R. record we know Nathan and Nancy were married in 1827. Obviously there is either error in the record or Milton was Nathan's child by a previous marriage. We will let the record stand until disproved. Nahan Witt died just a few months after obtaining title to his farm, leaving Nancy a widow with nine children, ranging from an infant to age nineteen. Although there was no A.D.C (Aid to Dependant Children) in those days, she managed to provide a livelihood for the family. Nathan and Nancy (Hendricks) Witt, along with other members of the family, were buried on the family farm. A subsequent owner explained the cemetery has been bulldozed; so its location can no longer be ascertianed. Glenn Pierce and Benton witt recall the approximate location. Nathan Witt left a will dated August 6, 1843, and recorded in September 5, 1843.
