From Mick Barnes book "Brinsley Barnes" In the biography of Martha Chandler contained in the "1888 History of Ruch County, Indiana", page 372, she names all four of her grandparents, of which two were Brinsley and Mary Smith Barnes. From the statements of Martha, it is believed that Brinsley, wife Mary, and at least their son Aaron and wife Ann and family moved to Rush County, Indiana around 1836-1837 time period. Rush County was part of the New Purchase land which occurred in 1818 and Rush County was formed around 1821 so the Barnses were again settlers in the classical sense. Brinsley and his wife Mary are believed to be the older people living within the household of Aaron Barnes in the 1840 census, page 283, for Rush County, Indiana. The 1850 census for Rush County, Indiana, page 829, for the household of Brinsley Barnes lists Brinsley, age 66, farmer, born in NC, and his wife Mary, age 70 and born in Virginia, and with property value of $1200.00. According to this census record, the birth date of Mary would have been in 1780. From Hosier's book, "On 26 January 1852, Brinsley Barnes of Rush County, Indiana, executed a warranty deed to his son Thomas Barnes and wife Mary A. Jones Barnes for a consideration of $440.00 for 80 acres the W1/2SW1/2W1/4 5-12-11, during their lives, saving to himself a life estate in 2 acres in the NW corner thereof (Deed Record V, page 439) and the manner and date of the ultimate termination of these two life estates subject of an affidavit by Clifford Barnes (Ernest Clifford Barnes b 1879 was a first cousin to Thomas Noah Barnes) executed 25 May 1950 (Affidavit Record 3, page 129) in which Thomas is identified as the son of Brinsley and Mary Barnes and his heirs named. In this affidavit was mentioned the Barnes family bible which is now in the hands of Pauline Whitcomb, 218 Broadway, Shelbyville, Indiana." circa 1966. Ida Pauline Laughlin Whitcomb married Dr. Roger Whitcomb in North Vernon, Indiana on 12 January 1934. Pauline was a grandaughter of James Mason and Margaret Conree Barnes. Note that some records indicate Conrey instead of Conree. Brinsley Barnes, his wife Mary, Brinsley's son Aaron and Aaaron's wife Ann, Brinsley's son Edward and Edward's wife Mary Ann are buried at the Little Flat Rock cemetery in Noble Township of Rush County. For the cemetery in general, some stones are missing, some are not legible, and some stones are broken. Brinsley and Mary have separate headstones. Mary's last name is spelled Barns while Brinsley's last name is correctly spelled as Barnes. Brinsley's headstone is broken and I Plan to have it repaired. Aaron and Ann have a common headstone that is huge but graceful. Edward and Mary have separate headstones. The cemetery is well cared for and the church appears to be very active. The Little Flat Rock Cemetery is located north of US 52 (going east out of Rushville) on county roads 200S-300S and 450 E. Brinsley Barnes and wife Mary along with their sons Aaron and Edward and their respective families arrived in Rush County, Indiana, around 1836 and settled in Noble Township. About 1843, Brinsley's son Thomas A. Barnes and wife Mary arrived with their familly and settled in Richland Township. Many descendants of these early Barnes families have remained in this county or nearby ever since. I believe today, 1998, that if I stood on the Courthouse square in Rushville and yelled the name Barnes, that about half of the people in the whole of Rush County would turn their heads and look my way,......for you see they would be my kinfolk.
Note:   BURIAL: Find-a-grave; Little Flat Rock Community Church Cemetery, New Sal
