Note: . Compiled by Boyd W Venable of 2312 Branner Avenue, Jefferson City, Tennessee, 3760, a Wiseman descendant. Jane Wisewan, born in 1812 in Estill County, Kentucky, is important in our family history because she was a link between my great-grandfather, Isaac Wiseman(5), and the Estill County, Kentucky family of Abner Wiseman Sr. and his wife Isabell Jane was the seventh child and second daughter in this family, an aunt to Isaac Wiseman(5). She married James Culberson (also spelled Culverson) in Kentucky on 4/18,1833. This couple continued living in Estill County at least through the year 1840. Culberson was born in 1813 in Virginia. In 1850, census records show that James and Jane Culberson had moved to Marion Township in Davis County, Iowa, near the Missouri border about 75 miles west of the Mississippi River. In that Iowa household, besides the seven Culberson children, ages 1 thru 16, were our ancestor Isaac Wisenan(5), age 23. his brother Abner Wiseman(5), age 20, and John Wiseman, 20 (probably the oldest son of Isaac Wiseman(4). The seven Culberson children were: Sophia, b.1834 in Kentucky; Eliza A, b.1838 in Kentucky; Lovina J b. 1840 in Kentucky; Sarah J, b.1842 in Missouri, twins(?) John and James, b.1846 in Iowa; and Clarinda, b.1849 in Iowa. The Wiseman boys, of course, were born in Kentucky. From those dates and the census of 1840, I have inferred the Culbersons left Kentucky about 1841, were in Missouri in 1842, and arrived in Iowa some time between 1842 and 1846. This tends to fit into the family tradition that after our branch of the Wisemans left Kentucky they went first to Missouri before mioving on west. The Culbersons went from Kentucky to Missouri and then to Iowa , and the two Wiseman boys must. have gone right along with them. In 1860 the Culbersons were still there in Marion Township (Oak Springs Post Office) in Davis County, with children Lovina, Sarah, twins John D and James P plus two more, Clarinda (another one) born in 1853, and Franklin Cuiherson, born 1834. The Clarinda who was born in 1849 was gone by 1860. She would have been but 1l years old, so probably died. 1850 Census Marion, Davis, Iowa 20 Sep 1850 Roll M432_182 Page 275 Image 533 Family 63 Wife: Jane age 38 Female birth Kentucky 1856 Iowa State Census Marion, Davis, Iowa Family 62 Wife: Jane age 42 Female birth Kentucky 1860 Census Marion, Davis, Iowa 15 June 1860 Roll M653_317 Page 35 Image 181 Family 239 Wife: Jane age 46 Female birth Kentucky 1870 Census Lincoln, Madison, Iowa 27 July 1870 Roll M593_407 Page 54 Image 107 Family 28 Wife: Jane age 55 Female birth Kentucky 1880 Census Dist 115 Grand River, Madison, Iowa 2 June 1880 Roll T9_353 House 11 Family 13 James Culverson age 66 Male birth Virginia Parents birth Virginia Jane Culverson age 67 Female birth Missouri Parents birth Kentucky
