Note: OBITUARY NOTICES January 1899 Mr. John Tubbs whose demise occurred on the morning of December the 28th after a lingering illness from epitheliomi of the face, which he bore with patience and Christian fortitude, removes a genial and cheerful temperament we can ill afford to lose. Mr. Tubbs was not a native of Maryland soil, being, as he sometimes asserted jocularly "One of the Blue Hens' Chickens". In his youth he crossed Marylands border, and meeting a welcome married and settled near Glen Burnie, forming attachments and friendships which out live his well spent life. His ability was varied. Nature study assisted his originating a new strawberry which promises much for Anne Arundel County. Another accomplishment was music, which his children inherit in a marked degree. One most cherished reminisence in establishing a singing school. After his human voice his violin ranked closest in his regard and so agreed those whose good fortune it was to hear his small instrument, which had the rare virtue of ***** ****** fullness. Mr. Tubbs was a member of Friendship Southern Meth. Church from which his funeral took place. Rev. Dr. DuLaney, minister in charge, officiating, thence to the place of burial beside his wife in the home - God's Acre - of her family. Mr. Tubbs married Olivia Stewart, daughter of the late Joshua Stewart and sister of Joshua Stewart, Jr. who departed this life in October last. Mrs. Tubbs died twenty years ago. Mr. Tubbs, who never remarried left eight children. Mr. John Linton Tubbs, J. Stewart Tubbs, Frank R. Tubbs, Harry Tubbs, Mrs. Edwin Harman, Mrs. James S. Smith, and Misses Jennie and Addie Tubbs. (Copied from The Maryland Republican, Annapolis, MD, January 7, 1899) Here's a second obit. which was published later: In last weeks paper there appeared a brief obituary notice on the death of our venerable and estimable citizen Mr. John Tubbs, whom we have favorably known for over 40 years. His honesty, truthfullness and Christian life were plainly exemplified to all who were associated with him, and will be remembers by those who intimately knew him while life lasted. Our respected friend was born in the State of Delaware. In early life he sought the Savior, found peace in believing, joined the M.E. Church, and continued to serve God up to his death. While quite young he studied vocal music, and being blessed with a melodious voice he became proficient in this science, and when he arrived at manhood he became a teacher of vocal music in his native state, and more than 40 years ago came to Anne Arundel Co. Maryland, and very successfully taught music in a number of churches and schoolhouses in this county, and his labors were highly appreciated by many members of this community. After laboring two or more years, he married Olivia Stewart, a daughter of Joshua Stewart, and soon there after settled in the upper part of the third election district, and became a cultivator of the soil. His married life was pleasant, peace and quietness reigned, and unto them were born four sons and four daughters and while there eight children were very young, it was his misfortune to lose his beloved companion in life. This was a severe loss to him and his youthful children, yet his confidence in God did not abate. He not only filled the position of father, but assumed the motherhood of his interesting family of children. How faithfully he performed the duty of father and mother the exemplary lives of his children testify. Those who have seen this family have seen nothing but devotion, kindness and affection rarely excelled. For the last 3 years Mr. Tubbs was sorely afflicted, and several operations were performed but he was never heard to complain and quietly and calmly submitted to fate, being consoled by the attention of his single daughters, who delighted to administer to his wants and cheer him in his hours of afflication. On Dec. 29 his body was removed to Friendship Church, where a large number of friends went to pay the last tribute of respect. Dr. DeLaney, his paster officiated. His remarks were earnest and forcible advising his hearers and the friends of the deceased to make the chief and supreme object of their lives to love nad serve God, live for Christ, that they might die for Him, and after this life live forever with the Lord. Mr. Tubbs remains were interred in the Stewart family burying ground beside his departed wife. (Copied from the Maryland Republican (MD Gazette), Annapolis, Maryland - 1899
