Notes
a. Note: The Haner Day Brick When I was about 10 years old (1973), I lived in the East Monbo Area of Troutman NC in a neighborhood called Spring Shores. My Mother, my sisters, Brother and I attended church at Bethel Baptist Church on East Monbo Road. It was about 2 miles from our home. Many times we played in the graveyard at night after church and saw gravestones with my grandfather's last name of Day on them but never thought anything of them. Later in my research of family I found that this is Haner Day and his wife Sally Sherrill Buried there. Across the street from the church was a road, I am unsure of the name (but i believe it may be Hudspeth Road). There were some kids who went to church with us that lived down this road. At the end of the road before it goes into Duke Power State Park was this old abandoned House. It was scary looking the way it sat back up in the woods always dark looking and overgrown with vines and trees and there was of course a ghost story to go with it. We were told that there had been a family who lived there who had locked their crazy daughter up in her room and she had tried to claw her way out and you could see the bloody claw marks on the walls of here room. Well being the brave souls my sister and I were , we decided to go explore this house one day. We did go in and to our horror we saw the claw marks ( Old red paint peeling off the walls). It seems in my memory that most of the time that we ever went by this house was at night and it was really scary. Now to get to the reason behind all this background history. In the early spring of 2004 I asked my Grandfather Robert Day if he knew of Haner Day and he said yes he did and he could take me to his old homestead if I would like. So of course I jumped at the opportunity to do some more family tree research. He explained to me that it was near the entrance to Duke Power State Park in the East Monbo Area . The Thought went through my head that just maybe the old haunted house of my childhood could actually be my Great,Great,Great,Great grandfathers home. Well low and behold that is where our journey took us. I was totally blown away that this was once where my gr,gr,gr,gr, grandfather lived. The house was no longer standing there and someone has been in there cleaning out the underbrush and bramble, I believe someone is getting ready to develop it into a neighbor hood. We walked back into the woods to where the house had stood and the old well was still there, cordoned off with caution tape, and old water trough was still there and what is left of a very old tree that used to stand in the front yard. As we walked out of the woods my Grannie Day looked down and in front of her was a very old brick from the foundation of the house .I was so excited to find this, and to the day my Grandfather died he always talked about how much of a miracle it was to find that brick just laying there for us. I have found a picture of him and my grandmother and his aunt Veda standing there in 1963 when he found his brick form the Haner Day house.
