Note: E-Mail from Marilyn R. Solari on 03/02/07 on Richard Colvin, Sr. Possible Father Hi Herman, I decided to answer your question about Richard Colvin directly rather than on the list. I sometimes won't put things on the list if there's a glitch or it's speculative because too often some people will overlook the nature of it and seize on it as fact! And then it gets reported as fact on web sites and so forth and my name gets referenced. You know what they say. A lie can go 'round the world before the truth can even get out of bed. On the face of it, it looks like Richard Colvin was the son of Charles Colvin. In the 1787 personal property tax list of Fauquier Co., VA, Richard is listed as between 16 and 21 and his tax was paid by Charles Colvin, as was the tax of William Colvin, also age 16 to 21. Normally, when the person paying the tax for a 16 to 21 year old has the same last name, it indicates father and son. The 1787 P.P. tax list was the only one requiring reporting of males who were 16 but under 21, more's the pity! Wish all the tax years had that requirement. Now here's the glitch. In 1766, Charles Colvin appears on the personal property tax list of Gilson Foote in the Southern District of Fauquier Co., VA. Tax lists are spotty at best for this county. Charles next appears in 1777 when he is on the Rent Roll of landowners in Fauquier Co., owing quit rents to Lord Fairfax for 80 acres of land. He continues to appear on extant tax lists in Fauquier Co. through 1795 when he disappears from that county's tax lists and reappears in 1796 on tax lists of adjacent Stafford Co., VA and is listed there through 1803 along with various of his married sons. Richard however never lived anywhere but Fauquier Co., VA. Faquier Co., VA Deed Book 15, pages 276 & 277, dated 18 Dec 1802, records Charles Colvin of Stafford Co., VA selling his 80 acres in Fauquier Co., VA to John Peters of Fauquier Co., VA. He sells this property along with his children who are listed as William Colvin and Elizabeth his wife, Rawleigh Colvin and wife "Aggath" [Agnes], John Colvin [he was unmarried so no wife named], Charles Colvin Jr. and Nancy his wife, and Rawleigh Holly [Hawley] and Mary his wife, all of Stafford Co., VA. No mention of Richard! If Richard was the son of Charles, why was he not included in this deed? That's the sticker! That's why I cannot say I am 100% positive that Richard Colvin was a son of Charles. He might have been a nephew or he might have been adopted or he might have been a son. I just can't say for certain. As you probably know, there were a ton of Colvin's in adjoining Culpeper Co. I've never been able to tie Charles in with them but there surely must have been a relationship of some sort. I have this record: Fauquier Co., VA Will Book 12, pg. 406 - Richard Colvin Estate: This was a document to divide Richard's property - a Chancery Court case dated 24 June 1828. Because Richard left minor children at his death, those children needed an adult representative in court. Here's the text: Lydia Colvin, widow and administrator of Richard Colvin, deceased, Thomas Holmes & Frances, his wife; Francis Manuel & Nancy his wife; James Peters & Mary his wife; Jesse Walker & Margaret his wife, George Colvin; Haywood Colvin, Plaintiffs - against - Lawson Colvin, Richard Colvin, William Colvin, Sarah Colvin, James Colvin, Defendants in Chancery. The court appointed James Colvin, guardian of the defendants. The commissioners were appointed to divide the land of Francis Manuel [215 acres] among the heirs of Richard Colvin, deceased. The land was divided in half - 1/2 to Manuel and 1/2 to the Colvin heirs. [Francis Manuel was not married to one of Richard's daughters - had to do with land Richard had purchased from Manuel and I think perhaps the deed had not been recorded - hence the court case.] Now WHO was the James Colvin appointed as guardian to Richard's minor children! He certainly wasn't Richard's son who was one of the minor children and was only 13 years old in 1828. The only James Colvin I can find who was living in 1828 and was old enough to have been this James Colvin was James, son of Daniel Colvin, of Culpeper Co., VA. Daniel's son, James, was about 49 years old in 1828 and he died in 1841. Why was HE appointed guardian of these children of Richard's. What's the connection here! Its something I sure would love to find out. Okay, any questions on your part? Marilyn R. Solari [email protected] 03/02/07 |
