Note: William Newton Russell Herman Waldrup-2015 According to Goodspeeds History of Tennessee The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1887: "William N. Russell, an enterprising farmer and stock raiser, of the Sixteenth District, was born in McMinn County, Tenn., March 1, 1840. He is the son of Thomas and Lucinda (Rodgers) Russell. The father was born in Alabama, about 1800, and died in McMinn County, about 1841. The mother was a native of Virginia, but married in Alabama. She was about the age of her husband, and her death occurred shortly after his. Our subject is the youngest of five children. He was left an orphan at an early age, and made his home with his grandparents until he gained his majority. The fall of 1861 he entered the confederate army, enlisting in Company H, Forty-third Tennessee Infantry. In 1862 he was elected orderly Sargent. He participated in the battles of Vicksburg, Piedmont, and Winchester, Va.; near the latter place he received a severe wound in the hip. He was one month in the Winchester hospital, and about the same length of time at Stanton, Va. He was in the service until April 9, 1865. He returned to Calhoun, McMinn County, rented land, and farmed. In 1873 he purchased 380 acres, upon which he now resides. February 13, 1870, he married Elizabeth J., daughter of Moses & Lorena Bonner, who was born January 6, 1842, near Calhoun, McMinn County, and died May 2, 1878. This union resulted in the birth of three children: H.T., C.L., and Frank L. Russell. October 5, 1878, our subject wedded Mattie, daughter of J.R. and Martha Sherrill, who was born July 19, 1850, in Caldwell County, N.C. The fruits of this union are Ethel, French, and Walter Russell. Mr. Russell is a stanch Democrat. He and his wife are active and consistent members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was the youngest of five children. He was raised by an Aunt and Uncle Emily and Jack Walden in Polk County, Tennessee. A sister, Helen, married a Scheistitt who lived in Cedartown, Georgia. They had two sons, Voltz and Walter. Voltz had no children. Walter, married five times, had several sons and one daughter who married a Wally and lived in Cedartown, Georgia. William Newton Russell was a twin. Nothing is known about the other three children." Current Research William Newton Russell may have had only two sisters. The first sister was Susan born in 1835-1838 and the second was Margaret probably his twin born also in 1840. No record can be found of a sister named Helen. No record has been found of his father Thomas and his mother Lucinda after 1842. The 1840 census has a Thomas Russell in McMinn County Tennessee with a boy and a girl under 5 and a girl between 5 and 10 years old. The older male was between 20 and 30 as was the older female. This fits for Lucinda thought to be born in 1812. Thomas was thought to be born in 1800 but that doesn't exactly fit the 1840 census. You would have to know his exact birthday and the exact date the census was taken. Thomas has not been located in a census prior to 1840 in Alabama although that is thought to be his birthplace. Lucinda is a different story as discussed later. Thomas M. Russell and Lucinda Rogers were married 2 April 1833 in Carroll County, Georgia according to Georgia Marriage records. Neither Thomas nor Lucinda show again in the 1850 census or later. If Thomas and Lucinda died following the 1840 census then it is of interest to find and track the young children supposedly raised by kinfolk. Susan In the 1850 census a Susan Russell 12 years old is residing with the Thomas Bartley family in Green County Tennessee. So far no connection with the Bartley family has been established. In the 1860 census a Susan Russell 22 years old is residing with James and Susan Walling in McMinn County Tennessee. This Susan Walling is William Newton's Grandmother Susannah (Susie) Shue (or Shew) who married James Wallen (Walling) after Joseph Rogers died around 1816 according to much research and lore available on line. Susan really cannot be traced from there but in 1870 a Susan A. age 34 is found married to Fredrick Lewis Schliestett in Floyd County Georgia. This would not have normally been picked up except for Goodspeed's History that says a Helen Russell married a Schleitett. It appears that it was Susan Russell that married Fred Louis Schliestett. Some Schliestett Family histories say that Susan A. was Susan Adelia Russell born in McMinn County Tennessee. Why wouldn't Thomas and Lucinda name their first female child Susan after Lucinda's mother Susannah? Margaret In the 1850 census a Margaret Russell 12 is living with Henry Rodgers 42 and Mahala Rogers 36 in Hamilton County Tennessee. Along with them are John 20, James 18, Audley 16, Maranda 13, Lucinda 11, Louisa 8, Joseph 6, William 4 and Ann 1. Lucinda had two brothers, Henry older and Edley the younger. Edley also married a Mahala So this is a direct family connection. In the 1860 census a Margaret Russell age 20 is living with the J J Culpepper family in McMinn County Tennessee twenty-five residences away from James and Susan Wallen along with the Susan Russell. In the 1850 census the Culpepper family was right next door to James and Susan Walling along with William Russell age 10. About two dozen Public Member trees for Jacob J Culpepper give his wife's name as Mary Ann Walling. Mary Ann Walling was James and Susannah Walling's daughter. This is a direct family connection. Susan and Margaret are probably William Newton's sisters. A Helen Russell does not show in any census for 1850, 1860 or 1870 in Tennessee, Alabama or Georgia. Unfortunately the 1840 census does not list family member names but still she should have been somewhere in the succeeding censuses which do list family member names. If she was born between 1833 and 1840 she would not have been married by the time the 1840 census was taken. This same argument also is applicable to any other female children that might have preceded William, Margaret and Susan. William Newton So far William Newton Russell has not been located in the 1860 or 1870 census. In the 1880 census he is married to his second wife Martha (Mattie) Sherrill my great grandmother and namesake of my mother, Martha Florence Russell Waldrup. In that 1880 census William has children Charles Lee, Frank Elmer, Arthur and Sarah, all of his first wife Jennie Bonner. However, the Chancery Court Records of McMinn County, Tennessee have several records of court actions involving William Newton and Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Bonner and her father Moses Bonner. William Newton Russell and Jennie Bonner were married 13 February 1870. Jennie Russell died 2 May 1878 in McMinn County, Tennessee. These court records cover a period from 1866-1873 so William Newton was in McMinn County Tennessee during that time. The Aunt and Uncle referred to as Emily and Jack Walden is obviously Emily and John Walling, Susan and James Walling's son. Wallin shows up as Wallen and Walling in numerous records of the same family, why not also Walden. The records also show that he lived with his grand mother Susan and her second husband James Walling for some period. I have taken their name to be Walling since that is the spelling in the Lee County Virginia Chancery Court record. James Walling died around 1870 because Susan is still listed in the 1870 Federal and 1875 State censuses in McMinn County, TN. Susan Walling died in 1880 in Mecklenburg, NC. I found that death record. This brings to mind that Susan was probably from NC and had family back there where she returned in her widowed old age. There are Shue (Shew, Shoe) families in Cabarrus and Guilford, NC all through 1820-1880. There was a Susannah Shew living with one other female in Cabarrus in the 1810 census right next door to Henry Shew and family. The females on that record are ages 26-44 and over 45. However, this would seem to make this Susannah too old for our family. Numerous other Family Histories on line refer to her as Susannah (Susie) Shue and would like for her to be of Indian descent. So far I have found no factual record showing the Susie or showing her as Indian or part Indian. There is not a Shue, Shoe, Shew, or Shuh in the 1830 census in Alabama, Georgia or Tennessee. However Cabarrus County N.C. is not that far north of Carroll County GA. I just can't make the connection to Henry Shew. Interesting Fact on William Newton In 1850 ten year old Wm Newton lived with James and Susan Walling as shown in the McMinn County census of 1850. Next door was Jack Culpepper and Mary Ann Walling, James and Susan's daughter. On the other side next door was the James Maxwell family which at first glance added nothing to the Russell search. However, James and Rachel Lemons Maxwell's children were Ann (24), Lydia (22), Rueben (21), Holden (17) and James (14). In the 1860 census Rueben Maxwell (31) was in Johnson County Texas again living next door to the Amon Bond family. Only now he was married to Rachel Bond with children Aaron (7), James (7), William (3) and Lydia (1). Lydia Maxwell later was to marry my Great Grandfather Steven Colvin who came to Texas after 1870. In 1860 Johnson County reached all the way to "Comanche Peak" which was just South of the city of Granbury and latter was made part of Hood County Texas when it was created. In 1860 Comanche Peak was just a mail stop. In 1854 Amon Bond had moved his family across the Brazos River and established the community of Stockton just west of the river and Northeast of the site later to be Granbury. The first Russell didn't move to Hood County until after 1870.
