a. Note:   Lucinda Roger's Aunt was Tianna (Dianna) Rogers Tianna ROGERS was full blood Cherokee Indian. Chief Oolooteka was the leader of the Cherokee people who lived on Hiwasee Island, located about 50 miles southwest of Maryville, Tennessee. This is also close to where Sam Houston grew up. The Cherokees are considered one of the Five Civilized Tribes. The Cherokee culture emphasized openness and flexibility. Their society was egalitarian; a class system did not exist and women were treated as equals. In an attempt to coexist with the white frontiersmen who settled on their boundaries, the Cherokees adopted the ways of the whites more readily than any other tribe in North America. In fact, the Cherokees fought beside the white Americans during the Creek War (1813-14), and by 1821, due to the efforts of Sequoyah, the Cherokees had their own written language. Parts of the Cherokee tribe moved across the Mississippi River into Arkansas in 1818.Chief Oolooteka and his people eventually immigrated west to Arkansas Territory in 1818, after being forced to leave their homeland by a treaty that was suspiciously obtained. Chief Oolooteka died in 1838. While Governor of Tennessee Sam Houston married Eliza ALLEN, after 11 weeks and much misery the marriage ended. After this brief marriage that ended unfavorably, he resigned from Tennessee Politics and went to live with his friends the Cherokee's. 6 years in Indian Territory, in Arkansas at that time. His second wife was Diana Rogers, a full blood Cherokee. He adopted Cherokee citizenship. His Cherokee name was Colonneh which means "the raven." The Cherokee who gave him the name was Chief Oolooteka who he viewed as his Indian father. The Chief's English name was John Jolly Oolooteka means" he who puts away the drum." The Chief died in 1838. The Chief died in 1838. He filed for divorce from Diana Rogers, which was granted in 1837. He was Baptized Catholic under the name Samuel Pablo Houston in Texas. He was later Military General of Military district East of the Trinity River in Texas. In 1836 he was elected commander in chief of the Army of Texas. As you should know he was twice President of the Republic of Texas. After Statehood he was Senator from Texas and in 1859 Governor of the State of Texas He was removed from office because he was opposed to secession and he retired to his home in Huntsvile, Texas.
