a. Note:   he 29th Pennsylvania infantry during the Civil War, as a private in company E. During the war, he acted as a drug clerk at General Hospital 16 in Nashville, Tenn. It was there, on 15 January 1865, that William was wounded in the left fore arm by a stray bullet as he stood in the doorway of the Hospital watching a group of "Colored" soldiers walking by saluting with their firearms. He was medically discharged on May 11, 1865. The bullet in his arm was never removed and caused slight paralyzation of two fingers. As a result of this wound, he was put on disability pension for the rest of his life. Because he could no longer use both hands as a laborer, he took jobs as an egg & butter salesman and janitor jobs. He lived for a good portion of his life at 3183 Belgrade, according to the 1900 Census, Gopsill's Philadelphia City Directories, and his death record. Physical description of William, according to Drs. JJ Ramsey, Samuel Starr, and John B. Shober (May 6th, 1891) - dark skinned and healthy. From 1875-1880, he resided at 1119 Moore, then moved ti 1738 Passayunk for a year or two, and from 1882-1893, he resided at 3546 Emerald. His street address from 1894-1902 was 3169 Belgrade, and from 1903-1913 he lived at 3183 Belgrade. Nancy Schanes lists a Flora Vautier, born about 1894 in her notes as an offspring of William and Catherine, however Flora was son Jacob's wife. Death record lists mother as Catherine Young, rather than Sarah Young.
