Note: Illine's genealogy said B: 29 Aug 1756. These pictures are from my visit to Plymouth, New York this summer. They were difficult to find, the cemetery is not hard to find, actually we knew where it was located. It took four trips to finally find the graves of Nathan and Sally. The others we found on our first trip. My goal for the trip was to find Nathan. My mother and her cousin Doris (Wales Plymouth cousins) had visited the cemetery in the early 1970's and had all the graves handwritten on paper. We found everyone but Nathan and Sally. Then when talking to some local folks and most have heard of the Wales family, we were told that years ago the boy scouts had done a clean up in the cemetery and piled up many stones. Since my cousin, Larry Wales and I went on four separate Friday's, he went back in between those trips and scoured the cemetery for piled stones. The only ones he could find were in one area and most were the family name Prentiss. We had gone to the local historical society and found a printout of the cemetery. After studying the printout and having the handwritten note from my mother, we went back on our final day together to the Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery with our fingers crossed. The cemetery has many old big trees and is not trimmed, the grass had been mowed at that point. Many stones are difficult to read, are leaning or are broken. All of a sudden Larry said to me, "Joanie, what does that say?" As I looked at the stone, the sun was shining directly on Sally Wales stone, we knew Nathan had to be very close by. He was fairly close to her stone but the stone was leaning forward so you could not read the inscription. I pushed it back slightly and lo and behold, there was our Nathan, the first Wales ancestor into NY from CT. A true pioneer!! Another family member has just informed me he is also a Patriot!! So here are the pictures. They are not the best quality as it is so shady and dark in the cemetery. The 1st is Nathan's stone; 2nd is Sally's stone; 3rd is Nathan's footstone with initials NW and the 4th picture is looking from the footstone to the back of Nathan's headstone which as you can see is leaning forward. Enjoy and more will be forthcoming. Do you mind if I share Wales Tales with 2 new cousins, Lisa from CO and Nancy from TX...they want to meet in Plymouth next year........my husbands 50th HS Reunion is then , so we are tentatively planning to go. Rosemary thanks for sending the copies of the 2nd and 3rd newsletters, they are fabulous!!!! Unfortunately, I have been transcribing my grandmother Wales diaries and that is consuming every second of my time and haven't been able to get through all the things I need to get on line. (ancestry, pictures, etc.) Made myself get the Nathan pictures on there yesterday! Rosemary, I will look for the pictures of Ruth Wales Isham house and other pictures I have. My cousin has old land deeds that I am working on getting him to find. I think I will send him these newsletters if it is ok and maybe that will spur him on. He is a wealth of information about the Plymouth area. He had me on every back road around there. Some being seasonal roads and I am glad it was June and not raining as I would still be there. Gave me a greater understanding of what our ancestors lived through!!!!! It was fabulous, I enjoyed every minute of my four days with Larry and the final day when we found Nathan and Sally was the culmination of a wonderful time. I picture the area in my mind every day.
