W. Harris Mr. Joel W. Harris died October 9th age 84 years 5 months. He had a heart attack and died suddenly near Elkton. He had been a resident of Todd County and a farmer all his life. He was married to Miss Lucinda Harris February 28th 1880. To their union were born three children. Two survive: Chester Harris, Olmstead, and Mrs. Reno Mallory, Elkton. Mrs. Jesse Harris died several years ago. His wife died in 1919. He then married Cornelia Walton. She died in September 1928. He later married Mrs. Nannie Stokes who survives. He leaves 18 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren, also three great great grandchildren, one half brother, Alva Harris. He was buried at Providence. The pall bearers were his grandsons, Selton, Richard and J.G. Mallory, Holman and Coney Harris and Billy Boley. Services were conducted at Providence by the Reverend Sipes. He was laid to rest under a mound of pretty flowers. The flower girls were grandchildren. Mrs. Richard Mallory, Elizabeth, Earleane and Peggy Jo Mallory, Mrs. Thelma Harris, Mrs. Conie Harris and Mrs. Sue Parker. Jamie's note: Coney, and Conie means Carney Harris; Thelma is Thelmer Harris; Mrs. Sue Parker was Carneys step daughter Carney and Thelma/Thelmer are Jimmie Bell/Jesse Holman's sons. His second wife's surname was "Walters" (GV). Hi Gary, Read your e-mail last night regarding Joel Washington Harris's death "article in the paper". Mom said it was clipped from the paper with no date, and you can't even tell what paper it is from, although I suppose it's the "Todd County Times" or whatever the local paper is. I have his death certificate though, and the death date is October 9, 1944. He was born April 21, 1859 and he was aged 85 years, 5 months and 18 days at time of death. His parents were John Harris and Martha (unknown). As to your note regarding Nannie Stokes Harris asking for money for a "black dress" and Aunt Annie's response... I've got it from Richard Mallory that Aunt Annie had all but disowned her father by this time, because he had "done married a woman that was no older than Irene!!" (his granddaughter). I guess it was pretty hard for Aunt Annie to take that her father married a woman as young as her daughter!! It would be interesting to find out more about Nannie Stokes, and her three children. Please check your files for these death certificates. If you do not fine them, let me know and I will mail them to you. Joel Washington Harris Lucinda Harris John J. Harris (signed by J. H. Harris, which is another indicator that Jesse Holman Harris was his grandson (relation), if that is the same J. H. Harris) father is William Harris, mother unknown. Jimmie Bell Harris (unfortunately, Jesse was not the informant, so I can't compare signatures with the one above, but whomever filled it out listed her husband as J. H. Harris). Talk to you later...
