Note: At the time I was preparing the family history for the Todd County book, I had believed that S.K. Mallory was William Eliah Mallory's father. This assumption originated from the tombstone arrangement at Providence UM Church Cemetery in Todd County KY. I read Irene Mallory Shemwell a draft of the family history. She immediately corrected me and said her great-grandfather's name was pronounced "Oz" or "Ause". She remembered her parents talking about him, but no details of what they said. I was able to correct my draft, but my Aunt, Thelma Arlene Harris Mallory was unable to make the correction before her version went to print. In June 2004, I found the drawing I did in the late 1960's showing my original family tree in my mother's attic. The names on it came from interviews with Aunt Irene and her mother, Annie Cora Harris Mallory. On it, I had William Eliah Mallory's father listed as "Oz". Aunt Irene thought Oz was buried at Providence Ch. Cem. near William Eliah Mallory, under a sandstone grave marker. (GV). http://members.aol.com/ArletaHowe/Page6.htm This journey, according to the national park people, began at a place called Long Island, TN (now Kingsport) and ended near what is now Lexington, KY. Information at The Cumberland Gap Park Visitors Center states that this was a six month expedition; usually taken during the winter months. Destinations were intentionally reached near the Spring of the year so those pioneers could get crops planted. abt. 1812 Osborn W. From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 06, 2003 7:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Alexander Mallory Family Gary, I am the grandaughter of Alexander and Mollie (Whitaker) Mallory. As you probably know already, Alexander was descended from the 2nd son of William and Catherine Mallory named John Senter (1807-1848) and their son, William Henry Harrison Mallory (1840-1901). I have quite a bit of information about this line and I will be glad to send it to you if you want me to. As for Osburn "Ozzie" W. Mallory, I do not know very much. I found him on the 1850 census of Simpson County, KY. He was age 38 at that time, which matched the date of birth I have for him (1812 in VA). His wife was named S. and I believe that stood for Sarah (Taylor). They had 4 children listed: M. Mallory (F) age 14, E. Mallory (F) age 10, William Mallory (M) age 8, S. F. Mallory (F) age 6 My notes about O. W. Mallory: 1. Name listed O. W. Mallory on the 1850 census Simpson County 2. Wife named S. Mallory (Maybe Sarah Taylor) 3. My family records show his name as Osburn "Ozzie" W. Mallory, born in VA 1812. 4. If he was married to Sarah Taylor, the vital statistics record in Simpson County show a son born to A. W. and Sarah on 29 Jun 1856. Sarah died 3 months later. In a court suit filed 20 Sep 1875 in Simpson County to divide the dower lands belonging to Sarah's mother (Mrs. Mary Taylor), his name is listed as A.W. Mallory (guardian for the son, John S. Mallory). (note: Sarah Taylor was a sister of Mildred Helen Taylor who married Samuel Kemper Mallory, Ozzie's older brother) 5. On the 1870 census record of Elkton (Todd County) KY. I found Osburn W. Mallory, age 60 Wife: Louisa S. age 50 son: John age 14 (this must be the John S. listed above) grandsons: Wm. T. Thomas (10) and Richard W. Thomas (7) 6. On 1880 census record of Elkton I found: Aravill Mallory (age 69). Born about 1811-1812. Wife: Louisa (age 59) Son John S. (age 23) grandsons: Wm. Thomas (19) and Richard Thomas (16) Mother in law: Berneta (Beneta) Clark (age 84) 7. Was Osburn W. and Aravill Mallory the same person? I believe they were. Can you clear up this mystery for me? Do you know when he died and where he is buried? I am not familiar with the name Willam Eliah Mallory. What do you have on him? I am attaching my file on the Mallorys of Simpson County, Ky. Please let me know if you find any mistakes or differences in our information. I would appreciate any additional information you can share with me. Thanks for contacting me. Helen Mallory Schmidt http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=shawcross&id=I18878 source: [email protected] Osborne married Louisa Clark sometime after 1850. I don't know if she is the mother of any of his children because I cannot find him until the 1880 census of Todd County. In that census my IIII great grandmother Beneta Clark is living with the family. He is called Araville W Mallory in this census. The census taker probably didn't hear it right. Louisa and Beneta were both living previously in Simpson County KY. If you have any other information about this family please let me know. Aravill W.
