Notes
a. Note:   According to A. B. Wilhite, Ab Harris was to be committed to Western State Hospital because of mental instability. None of the County officials were available to transport him, so a private citizen who frequently spent his time in and around the courthouse was assigned the task. Ab Harris was put in his car and driven off toward Hopkinsville. Dinner time came and the driver did not appear. Since was never known to miss a meal, he was assumed to be missing. When his car was found abandoned near the southwest corner of the public square, officials began to re-trace his route of the day before. Fearing foul play at the hands of Ab Harris, a telephone call was made to the Asylum to see if he ever made it there. The staff reported that he had delivered the patient as expected and was assumed to have returned home. They were careful to verify the patient's name was Ab Harris and that he was still in their custody. Arrangements were made for the official to question Harris in person to find out if the driver had told him anything that might explain his disappearance. As he was led to the room where Harris was being held, the official questioned the staff about the details of his arrival. They told him there was nothing unusual the day before -- the patient had resisted them from the start, saying he was not crazy and telling them he didn't belong there -- nothing unusual at all for a mental patient's first night. When the door was unlocked, and the official saw the patient, he realized his claims were true. Ab Harris had somehow switched places with the driver at the hospital and simply driven away in his car. Upon the driver's safe return, it was determined that ol' Ab could not have pulled off such a trick if he were crazy and was given his freedom.
