a. Note:   ed to his own property, "Smithfield" Section 29 Hundred of Roberts. It was 24 km from Arno Bay. The land was cleared with an 8 foot wooden roller and six horses. Crops of wheat and oats first reaped with a 4' 6" stripper, then a 10' stripper - later an AL 10' harvester and grain cleaned by hand and motor winnower. It was always "open house" at Smithfield and visitors enjoyed the beautiful gardens, sing songs, sport, seeing horses broken in, chaff cutting, blacksmithing or rope being made.
 Darrel Hayward ( GGnephew)can remember being there in early times ( about 1952) and being given the chance to ride one of the last draught horses in the area.
 Many holidays were spent at Arno Bay, firstly camping in tents - with a home made swing and see-saw. The children loved collecting shells including bright coloured fan shaped ones. Periwinkles (shell fish) from the rocks made a tasy meal. Hope bought the first shack to be built at Arno Bay mainly because of his great love of fishing - making great catches from the jetty. The shack was originally owned by Vin Gaskill. Later he built a besser block building on the same site - at the end of the running track.
 When they first married Hope & Jean lived under a government shed, divided into five rooms with celetex ceiling and double walls of neatly sewn new wheat bags. In 1954 they moved into their new home nearby - it was built of limestone Hope raised on the farm and from Duck Pond near Port Lincoln. It had stone frontage and brick trim with verandah all round. In 1982 they still ived in "Smithfield" after celebrating their golden wedding in 1979.
