Note: Jim was born at Pt. Broughton,(the 6th.son).He attended Garfield school when he was 5 years old.In 1917 he went to Verran,on the West Coast property minding sheep,untilhis father took them back to the Garfield farm.In 1921 he left home,working for Arch and Harry Fletcher at Pt.Broughton,Hillgrange Station,Nackara,owned by W.Connell,Munundo Station,40 miles east of Yunta,where he broke in 27 young horses to saddle,not one bucking.Next he worked atGlen Horn Station,about 90 miles east of Broken Hill,where he became head stockman.He then went droving with Claud Kidman,nephew of Sir Sydney Kidman,finally returning to marry Maud in 1930.They purchased a butcher's shop at Pt.Broughton during depression years,which turned out to be a failure.Farm work called again,this time to the Murray Mallee,on a farm named "Galea",owned by Longmires.His wife and daughter were with him.Jim took on managing Borungee station,also working on various farms before joining the A.I.F.,serving in Egypt and the islands.Maud and the children lived at Mundoora and Barunga Gap.Jim left the army,returning to work for a pre-war employer.Their family then moved to Snowtown,where Jim worked for the District Concil until his retirement at the age of 65.They still live in Snowtown. !Details from THE WHITTAKER SAGA,MARY BEARD BOX 36 LOCK S.A.5633
