Ancestral File: CHIL SLGC 12 Oct 1910 14 Apr 1960 CHIL SLGC 12 Oct 1910 05 Nov 1957 SL Ancestral File lists baptism as 30 June 1931 But Wear Leavitt joined the Church with his wife in Quebec in the 1830s, and migrated to Illinois to join the Saints. They settled in Illinois but not in Nauvoo--where he died in 1839--and Phoebe sold out there and went on to Nauvoo. From Ancestral File: NAME Weare (Or Wier) /LEAVITT/ GIVN Weare (Or Wier) MARR DATE 11 NOV OR DEC 1825 Wear Leavitt joined the Church with his wife in Quebec in the 1830s. The Church Almanac states that the conversions were in 1836, and the converts migrated beginning on 20 July 1837. They settled in Illinois but not in Nauvoo--(at Twelve Mile Grove, which is stated to be in Will County) where Weir died in 1839--and Phoebe sold out there and went on to Nauvoo. According to the Church Almanac, under chronology for 1836, "April: Apostle Parley P. Pratt was set apart for a mission to upper (eastern) Canada, the first area outside the United States opened for the preaching of the gospel." Under Quebec, Canada, it states "Early missionaries in the 1830s frequently traveled through but found little success in Lower Canada, as the province of Quebec was then called... In 1836, however, Hazen Aldrich and Winslow Farr labored in Stanstead County and baptized a number of people. Twenty-three of these emigrated July 20, 1837...." This was the background of the conversion of the Leavitt family in Quebec, just across the Canadian border. Little is known of Weir Leavitt, except that (1) he married about 1815 to Abigial Cowles and had three children: Jeremiah, Charlotte, and Anne; and the mother Abigail died abt 1824; (Charlotte came to Utah; Jeremiah died in Will County, Illinois according to his half-brother George, which would be between 1837-1839; Anne is not mentioned as a sister except listed in 1942 temple sealings, so probably died in Canada.) (2) Weir married (2) in 1825 to Phoebe Cowles, a sister to Abigail, and they had several children, including the ancestral Louisa who was born in 1835 in Quebec, Canada. (Charles who "went to Chicago" after his father's death, per statement of his brother George; Abigial who died as an infant; George (born 1828), Emeline, Louisa, and Levi who died as an infant. George, Emeline and Louisa all came West.) (3) Weir joined the Church in life about 1836 in Quebec, Canada, and took his family to Illinois in 1837. He was the eldest son, and appears to have been caring for his widowed mother, who died in the same county in Illinois about the same time as the death of Weir. Weir's mother and several of his brothers and sisters all joined the Church about 1836 (based on the date given in the Church Almanac for the conversions--it is probable that all were baptized about the same time). In 1837 "as a colonly of emigrants led by Mr. Franklin Chamerlain, if we are well informed" (source: Leavitt Genealogy, 1924). The Church Almanac lists 20 July 1837 as the date the emigrants left Quebec. His children all are listed as born in Quebec, Canada. His daughter Charlotte (born 1818) describes the home where she grew up in Quebec as a clearing in the forest, where they made everything to provide for their needs, including growing wool, shearing, weaving, dying, and spinning the thread to sew it together; made sugar from maple sap, etc. (See her brief history). (4) Weir died in Mar 1839 in Will County, Illinois. (The place they settled is listed as Twelve Mile Grove, and listed in Will County, Adams County, and some other Illinois counties. Its exact location is unclear, but the place of their settlement, of his death, and the birth places of some of the children born to his siblings is always definitely listed as Will County. His daughter Charlotte's history listed it as Wilson County [there is none], and another record lists it as Wilson, Will County, Illinois.) It is very possible that a search of records on Franklin Chamerlain may reveal more on the LEAVITT family. Weir's sister Rebecca married Franklin Chamerlain. It is unclear whether Chamberlain remained with the Church or not. Histories of two of Wier's children, Charlotte Leavitt Baker (born 1818), and Geroge Leavitt (born 1828) have been found, along with a history of his nephew Thomas R. Leavitt, son of his brother Jeremiah II, all of which give details of the life of Wier. There are undoubtedly others that could be found. Note: the Elder who brought them the gospel, Hazen Aldrich, (spelled Eldredge in Charlotte's histoy, and Allredge in the Nauvoo records of Jeremiah II) did not remain faithful to the Church. (He can be traced, and is last found in California in 1860.) His missionary companion in 1836-37 was Winslow Farr. Weir was sealed to his parents in 29 June 1932 (OTR film 170743), and also 28 Sept 1960 in Manti, which is the date that is listed on the Archive Record.
