Note: !Merged names from Ancestral File: Phebe Cowles and Phoebe Cole or Cowels Marriage could be December 11, 1825. Apaprently all three of Abigail's children did join the Church, but her son died in 1846??--probably in Illinois--the two girls apparently did come west-- Charlotte, born 5 Dec 1820 in Quebec, endowed 6 Jan 1846 in Nauvoo--did temple work for her mother Abigail Cowles 18 Jan 1885 in Logan; and Anne born about 1822; Jeremiah son of Weir and Abigail died about 1873 in one record, in 1846 in temple sealing record--I suspect the 1846 death date is correct. !Your ancestor--her daughter, Louisa Leavitt, was just past two years old when her father, Weir Leavitt, died in early 1839 in Illinois. Her mother died in 1850 in Utah--when she was still fairly young. !Ancestral File gives daughter's baptism date for Phebe--1844, but Phoebe was baptized in Quebec before they came to Illinois, and Weir died in 1839 in Illinois. Both Weir and Phoebe were baptized abt 1837 during their lives, in Quebec area. !Official temple record sealing sheet for 28 Oct 1948 in Arizona temple shows Phoebe and Abigail as daughters of Phineas Cowles and Catherine Stone, along with 7 other children (9 in all), sealed to their parents. sources cited: sent by Gerlad Fuller; Cowles Gen, pp 231-2; N.E. Register 72:285; Simon Stone Gen p 148; Dudley Leavitt Gen. heir: George Leavitt, grandson !Indicators are that the 14 June 1934 sealing to parents was to Timonthy Cowles and his wife as parents. Since no temple has yet been referenced with that date, it will take time to try various temples. But Timothy is listed as father of the girls on their TIB cards--comparable time period. !Needs to be resolved --verifired; I suspect that the correction in 1948 is justified, and that they are the children of Phineas...but I have not done the research to verify this. ELN, 3-96, Family History Dept Staff. Phoebe Cowles was endowed in 1846 as Phoebe Leavitt--see Nauvoo Register She and her husband Wear Leavitt joined the Church in Quebec in the 1830s, and migrated to Illinois with the idea of joining the Mormons; they settled in Illinois but not in Nauvoo. Weir died in 1839 and Phoebe sold out there and moved to Nauvoo....where on 3 January 1846 she was endowed as Phoebe Leavitt; and later was one of four wives sealed to Benjamin Covey. (No other obvious reference to Benjamin Covey has been noted). Phoebe and her children came to Utah in 1847 and she died as widow of Weir Leavitt in April 1850 in Salt Lake City--she is buried in Salt Lake City cemetery, as Phoebe Leavitt, widow of Wear Leavitt (her birth date is given in the cemetery record as 1796 and in the Nauvoo endowment record as 1794.) There has been conflicting information on the names of her parents. They are either Phineas Cowley and Catherine Stone or Timothy Cowley and his wife Abigail or his wife Sarah Stilton. The COWLES went from New Hampshire to Quebec--apparently Phineas and Timothy are brothers--sons of Nathaniel Cowley. (But apparently there is a Stone genealogy (Simon Stone) that identifies the girls as children of Catherine Stone and Phineas Cowles. This needs to be examined.) A careful study of the records seems to clearly indicate that these are the children of Phineas (not Timothy). Apparently the children were sealed to Timothy Cowles and Sarah Stilton in 1934 (though I have not seen that record--no record has yet stated which temple that sealing was done in--and it was not in the temple where the family were doing endowments at that time period; but the TIB cards do list Timothy as the father. Then on 28 Oct 1948 in the Arizona temple the children were sealed to Phineas Cowles and Catherine Stone--which I belive to the correct parents. See notes in Phineas's record for more on sources cited on temple sealing record in 1948. See notes in Phineas's record for more on sources cited on temple sealing record in 1948. Phoebe was second wife of Weir (Wear) Leavitt. --his first wife was named Abigail Cowles--a sister to Phoebe. Often a sister would come to take care of the children, and later marry the sister's former husband...that is what appears to have happened here. Two of Abigail's children did join the Church and apparently the other died in Canada. Her son died in Will County, Illinois (according to the staement of his half-brother George--which would have been 1837-1839), Charlotte did come west. Proxy ordinance dates indicate that either Anne died young or did not remain active but no mention of her by sister or half-siblings. Charlotte, born 5 Dec 1820 (or 1818 in some records) in Quebec, endowed 6 Jan 1846 in Nauvoo--did temple work for her mother Abigail Cowles 18 Jan 1885 in Logan; and Anne born about 1822; Jeremiah son of Weir and Abigail is listed witho various death dates, but since his half-brother George states where he died and approximately when, that is quite clear. ********Direct-line ancestor--her daughter, Louisa Leavitt, was just past three years old when her father, Weir Leavitt, died in early 1839 in Illinois. Her mother died in 1850 in Utah--when she was still fairly young. Ancestral File gives daughter's baptism date for Phebe--1844, but Phoebe Cowles Leavitt was baptized in Quebec before they came to Illinois, and Weir died in 1839 in Illinois. Both Weir and Phoebe were baptized abt 1836/7 during their lives, in Quebec area. Official temple record sealing sheet for 28 Oct 1948 in Arizona temple shows Phoebe and Abigail as daughters of Phineas Cowles and Catherine Stone, along with 7 other children (9 in all), sealed to their parents. sources cited: sent by Gerald Fuller; Cowles Gen, pp 231-2; N.E. Register 72:285; Simon Stone Gen p 148; Dudley Leavitt Gen. heir: George Leavitt, grandson (These references could be further examined.) Indicators are that the 14 June 1934 sealing to parents was to Timonthy Cowles and his wife as parents. Since no temple has yet been referenced with that date, it will take time to try various temples. But Timothy is listed as father of the girls on their TIB cards--comparable time period. There is an Archive Record that removes these two sisters, and changes the relationship of the heir, and reverts to the relationship of nephew instead grandson, and lists a different submitter. I suspect the Archive Record was corrected (in error); the official temple record does list these girls (Abigail and Phebe) sealed to Phineas and his wife on 28 Oct 1948 in the Arizona temple. Summarized by Elizabeth L.Nichls 6-98, Family History Dept Staff. I am convinced that they are the children of Phineas. 5/98 ELN And the Stone family history needs to be examined, as that was apparently used in 1948 to establish that fact. Phoebe Cowles was endowed as Phoebe Leavitt--see Nauvoo Register She and her husband Wear Leavitt joined the Church in Quebec in the 1830s, and migrated to Illinois with the idea of joining the Mormons; they settled in Illinois but not in Nauvoo. Weir died in 1839 and Phoebe sold out there and moved to Nauvoo....where on 3 January 1846 she was endowed as Phoebe Leavitt; and later that month was one of four wives sealed to Joseph Covey. (No other obvious reference to Joseph Covey has been noted). Phoebe and her children came to Utah in 1847 and she died as widow of Weir Leavitt in April 1850 in Salt Lake City--she is buried in Salt Lake City cemetery, as Phoebe Leavitt, widow of Wear Leavitt (her birth date is given in the. cemetery record and in the Nauvoo endowment record.) There is presently conflicting information on the names of her parents. This question needs to be resolved. Then on 28 Oct 1948 in the Arizona temple the children were sealed to Phineas Cowles and Catherine Stone--which I belive to the correct parents [Elizabeth L. Nichols]. See notes in Phineas's record for more on sources cited on temple sealing record in 1948. Phoebe was second wife of Wear Leavitt. --his first wife was named Abigail Cowles--apparently a sister to Phoebe. (As you know, often a sister would come to take care of the children, and later marry the sister's former hsuband...that is what appears to have happened here.) Apaprently all three of Abigail's children did join the Church, but her son died in 1846??--probably in Illinois--the two girls apparently did come west-- Charlotte, born 5 Dec 1820 in Quebec, endowed 6 Jan 1846 in Nauvoo--did temple work for her mother Abigail Cowles 18 Jan 1885 in Logan; and Anne born about 1822; Jeremiah son of Weir and Abigail died about 1873 in one record, in 1846 in temple sealing record--I suspect the 1846 death date is correct.
