Seal to Parents: 17 Nov 1959 MANTI - Manti Utah Because of religious dissention which prevailed throughout the kingdom many puritans left for the New World. Among those puritans were Edward Gilman and his family. Five years before this time his sister Mary, her husband Nicholas Jacob, their two children and her nephew Thomas Lincoln had gone to America with Friends and neighbors from Hingham. They settled in a little community near Boston, named Hingham in memory of the home town in England. They arrived on the Ship Diligent on 10 August 1638. With Edward came his wife Mary Clark Gilman, daughters Mary who had just married John Folsom, Lydia who later married Daniel Cushing also a passenger on the Diligent, Sarah who would later marry John Leavitt <jleavitt.htm>, a member of a prominent New England family, and sons Edward, John and Moses. This family of Gilman's had a family history in Norfolk of over 200 years, and by connections with the other branches of the family still earlier records. Viz, to John Gylemyn Kings Marshall in Henry III's reign AD 1261, and probably still further to Gilman Troed-dhu, 820 AD, and Coel Godeboc, king of the Britain's circa 300AD. The oldest Gilman record specially connected with Norfolk gives, singularly enough the name of Geoffrey Gilemyn as belonging to the lete of St. Peter, mancroft, Norwich, on a Norwick Roll, bLR # 9 circa 1300 � 10 This is prob the same Geoffrey Gilmygas the Keeper of Canterbury Castle. (or Governor). From the parish register of Caston it is found that Edward Gilman married Rose Rysse on June 12, 1550. She survived her husband and proved his will, which was dated Feb 5,1573, on Jul 7, in the same year. The widow married again at Caston, Oct 3, 1613. As the parish registers of Caston commence in 1539 the date and place of birth of Edward Gilman are not known. The children of Edward Gilman of Caston, and Rose Rysse his wife are: 1. John, the eldest 2. Edward 3. Robert, who was babt. At Caston, July 10, 1559 married Mary and was buried Caston March 6, 1631. He had a son John. 4. Lawrence, babt. At Caston Nov 3,1501,and buried on Aug 21, 1629 at the same place. Will dated August 1,1629 (proved Dec 8, 1629). He married 1st Elizabeth James of Caston, June 20, 1588 who was buried in the same place Dec. 20, 1602. He married 2nd Joan Sponer who outlived him. Issue: Margaret, Katherine, Rose, Jone, Elizabeth, Lenord, babt.at Caston onAug 17, 1597 md Elizabeth (will proved Sept 9, 1634), Edward md Caston Jan 29, 1614 Rebecca Sponner b. Dec 24, 1624. All descendants of the above named sons as collected by Samuel Heyhoe Le Neve Gilman. The children of Robert Gilman of Caston and Mary his wife is: Robert of Hingham, who married Rose Hawes, at Hingham May 14, 1611 and 2nd Mary who survived him, proving his will dated Sept. 27,1558. on Jan 21,1658/9. Edward married at Hingham June 3, 1614 Mary Clark. The dates of birth of their two sons are not known, the Register at Hingham commencing 1601. Edward Gilman and his wife, three sons, two daughters, and three servants immigrated to America on April 26, 1638, leaving Gravesend on that date in the ship "Diligent" of Ipswich, Capt. John Martin, and arrived Boston, Mass August 10, 1638. Edward Gilman became the ancestor of nearly all the large family of Gilman's now in America. The other two sons of Robert Gilman were. Lawrence babt at Caston Dec 1, 1594 married Ann< will proved on Feb 8,1647(daughters Margaret, and Katherine). John babt. at Caston,on Feb 28,1598. His wife Ann proved his will June 14, 1639, he received his father's land in March 1631. �b�The occasion of there emigration was as follows:�/b� The Rev. Robert Peck, who was then Rector of Hingham, having been instituted as far back as the year 1605 was " a man of very violent and schismatual spirit. He pulled down the rails and leveled the alter and the whole chancel a foot below the church, but being prosecuted for it, by Bishop Wren, he determined to leave the kingdom, and seek shelter in the New-World. A party of 133 men, women, and children, his parishioners, having sold their estates for half their value, joined him, and including Edward Gilman his wife and children sailed, they settled in the town of Hingham on Massachusetts Bay, at which place emigrants from Hingham England had settled five years previously. Children of Robert Gilman, son of Robert Gilman, and brother of Edward Gilman were: Daniel babt. Mar 25, 1624 at Hingham, Mary babt. Nov 8,1647 at Hingham, Daniel (2) babt. Feb 14,1648 married Ann Daniel, will proved 1713 or 1714, a daughter who married Thomas Beloe and married 2nd ______Baynes Children of Robert Gilman and Mary_______ his 2nd wife; Samuel babt Hingham Oct 5, 1644 buried at Hingham Sept 25, 1698 mad Lydia Williams at St. Peters Wingate, Norwich July 1,1674.
