Text:   My ancestors are David Colton and Dolly Powers. David, I believe was very good friends with Joseph Leavitt. When they were living in Rupert, VT they sold land between each other several times. Two of the Coltons married two of the Leavitts. This is how I happen to be researching the Leavitt family, even though it is not my direct line. Lucina Leavitt married Charles P. Colton and had the following children: Lauretta L. b. 13 Feb 1813 in Rupert; Julletta M. b. 11 Jan 1816 in Rupert; Maddison Gillespie and Addison Porter (twins) b. 30 Mar 1830 in Manlius, Onondaga Co. NY. Lucina died 17 Jun 1839 in Lancaster, Erie Co. NY. Source: David and Dolly Colton Family Bible Samuel Leavitt married Sylvia Colton. She died in 1847. He died 1 Jan 1869. They had one child: Preston who married Mary Ann Wiggans. They had several children, moved from Otswego Co. NY to Michigan about 1855, where both parents and nearly all their children shortly died. Source: A Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Quartermaster George Colton by George Woolworth Colton, 1912. Joseph Leavitt died in Onondaga County, NY on 31 May 1835. His widow was Abigail Leavitt. His children are listed as his only heirs which makes me wonder if Abigail is not their mother. The children are listed as "of full age." They are: Oliver Leavitt (Oswego Co.) Samuel Leavitt (Jefferson Co.) Love Smith, wife of ---Smith (Oswego Co.) and Lucina Colton, wife of Charles Colton (Genesee Co.) SOURCE: Probate Records for Onondaga County, NY, Book F pg. 76-77. FHL Film # 873191 I didn't copy the will of Joseph but I did copy these papers relating to the will that gave where the children were living. I was looking for the death place of Lucina. Later, I found out a family member had David and Dolly's bible and it had her death date and place recorded in it. Unfortunately it didn't have a marriage date but I think they were probably married in Rupert. I hope this is helpful to you and if you have any questions I will try to answer them. I noticed that you are also in California. I am north of you in the Santa Clarita (Newhall, Saugus, Valencia) area. Take care, Rose Ann Thomas

Notes
a. Note:   email from Mary Elizabeth Leavitt-Guy, 9 Mar 2005 to JVL: In answer to your letter today I found a small clipping while sorting out that mess of papers on the Leavitts. I have always been proud of being a Leavitt. While growing up I though my Uncles and aunts were very smart, turns out they were. Now I'm at 79 and the oldest of that line. That last sounds terrible but it's not. But to get back to Samuel, I told you he took in several children, more than likely orphans. On that census Jane wasn't his wife, he was her guardian. I said I was going to copy this, since I don't have a printer - But you were right that Lusana and Susanna were the same girl. Samuel was appointed guardian in 1869 of Jane A; Tobus S; Samuel F.; Frank ( not Frank Perry Leavitt, in 1869 he was in Ill); Ermone; Emma I; Calvin E. Do I count seven children? But that's what the clipping says. Please don't do anything until you get a copy of this clipping. On to your questions about Carol Smith Leavitt. I have all her info on Harlin and Willis , Frank's brothers. These three were the only children of John Preston Leavitt who lived to adulthood. Oh take that back Winsor Died as a young man Please remember I'm not too good at putting all this down, my thoughts get ahead of me. My father was named Guy w. Leavitt (Wilber,Frank, John Preston, Samuel ) and I married Harold E. Guy. Hope that explains all the Guy names I'll keep writing so as to confuse you further, Sinerely Mary Leavitt Guy
