a. Note:   Joseph had a slave, Prince Estabrooks, whom his son Benjamin inherited. This Prince and Benjamin's young son Joseph were present at the battle on Lexington Common, Massachusetts April 19, 1775. Prince was wounded; Joseph had a very narrow escape and aided in carrying the wounded slave to his father's house near by. His father had taken his family of small children and his wife to a safer place about a mile away."
