Notes
a. Note:   [John Bate Family.FBK.FTW] [Bates 296.FTW] [Brderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #0296, Date of Import: 29 Jan 1999] Bates College of Lewiston, Maine, is an outgrowth of the Maine State Seminary chartered in 1855, and became Bates College in 1864. "The name 'Bates College' was given by the Trustees in grateful ackowledgment of the generosity of Mr. Benjamin E. BATES of Boston, Mass., one of the founders of the city of Lewiston. Mr. BATES had taken a warm interest in the Seminary, and it was his encouragement with a subscription in 1863 of $25,000, which led to its developement into the College. To this sum he subsequently added $75,000." The College was unsectarian but decidedly Christian in its teachings. The College has a Benjamin E. BATES Library Fund named in memory of the son of the founder, Benjamin E. BATES, Jr. --"The Bates Bulletin" Vol. I, Series III p.19.
