a. Note:   "John born at Portland Point, January 22, 1768. He was baptized by Rev.Mr. Woods July 1, 1769. On December 20, 1792, he married Catherine Ebbettin Sheffield. Her family were Dutch Loyalists. She was born May 3, 1775.She was a short very energetic woman. John Estabrooks obtained a largegrant of land in the original grant out near Lake Maquopit, Parish ofSheffield, in 1809. On December 18, 1797, he bought land near Swan Creekin the Parish of Burton [lot No.6] from James Webber. He had apparentlyworked that land prior to buying it. in the vicinity until he owned agreat deal. John obtained a large grant of land in the original grantnear Lake Maquapit, Parish of Sheffield in 1809. He continued buying land in this vicinity until he owned a great deal. Hebuilt the first frame house in the section of the country. It now forms the the shell of the old homestead. It was here that hisfather, Elijah Estabrooks, died. John Estabrooks sometimes acted as anitinerant Baptist preacher, travelling around the country on horse-back.He died February 2, 1861. His will is in the Record Office at Oromocto.His death is commemorated in a poem in "New Brunswick and Other Poems"published by David Palmer in 1869. His wife died July 26, 1865.
