Notes
a. Note:   A PORTRAIT OF JOHN BELLAMY LEAVITT oil on canvas 30 by 24 1/4 in.(76.2 by 61.6 cm.) Signed and dated W.T. Bartoll. 1847, l.l. William Thompson Bartoll was the son of John and Rebecca Bartoll and was baptized in Marblehead, Massachusetts on June 22, 1817. He married Sally L. Selman in April of 1835. Bartoll, like his father, uncle and brother, was a house painter, as well as a portraitist and mural painter. He is known to have exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum between 1841 and 1855 and he died in 1859 in Marblehead. (For further information see George C. Croce and David H. Wallace, The New-York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860, New Haven, 1957, p. 34). In 1826, the sitter married Esther Lindsey Selman, a sister of Bartoll's wife, Sally. This is considered to be one of Bartoll's most pleasing portraits of men. Literature: The Magazine Antiques, (November, 1982), p. 1090, pl. V. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ E-mail from Shannin Burke ([email protected]), 11 Feb 2009, to Joseph V. Leavitt for WALF: Joseph, The letters are definitely from John Bellamy Leavitt, Jr. The family descends from Deacon John Leavitt through his son Samuel Leavitt. The letters last remained in the hands of Suzanne Leavitt, wife of John W. Leavitt who lived in Middlesex Mass., before retiring to Bradenton FL where presumably John preceded his wife's death and she died in 1993. I even found a portrait of John B. Leavitt Sr. :) that NALF didn't have for their archives. According to NALF: " There was also the John Bellamy Leavitt family of Manchester/Bedford, NH, who is mentioned in Samuel book, page 117-118. In this book, John B has a son, also named John Bellamy (though my copy has Bellamy crossed off and Francis written above it), who was born 12 Oct 1826-27 in Salem, MA. As the book says, "He moved to California and sailed from San Francisco for home but was never heard from". John Jr's sister Sarah married Charles Pool in Marblehead, and perhaps lived there. Brother Nathaniel died in Swampscott (next to Marblehead). John B Sr's wife, Esther Selman, was the daughter of Capt Francis Selman, and they were a Marblehead family. Before moving to Manchester, NH, where they had a hotel, they had lived in Salem, MA. You may have the very last words this man sent home to his family." This is verified in the letters as Jr. mentions visiting his maternal grandparents in Marblehead, but not able to see the Salem folk; his last letter confirms receiving two letters from Frank. I am going to transcribe the last letters tomorrow (I hope) then put together all of the information and scan it in to the computer. These letters got so far away from any Leavitt family that I am truly pleased I purchased them to assist in the archives! All of you have been so incredibly helpful in my first foray into genealogy! Art and antiques are my specialty, which is how I easily found John Bellamy Leavitt's portrait in my data base! Thank you for all of your help!
