Notes
a. Note:   : George CARTWRIGHT. MYCOCK (CARTWRIGHT) and all related family information supplied by Anne WILSON ([email protected]). Anne is a descendant of Ann MCCABE, Catherine's sister. John (George) MYCOCK arrived as a convict at Port Jackson, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 9 March 1823 onboard the 'Princess Royal', having been sentenced at Lancaster, Lancashire, England in 1821. His Certificate of Freedom; Number: 29/485 says his trade was a Cotton Spinner. His date of trial was 18 October 1821. He was born in 1796. He was 5' 5' tall, with a pale, pock-marked complexion, carroty hair with grey eyes. He was sentenced to 7 years. From Sydney Gazette & New South Wales Advertiser: Principal Superintendent's Office, Sydney, May 19 1824... "The undermentioned prisoners having absented themselves from their respective employments, and some of them being at large with false certificates, all Constables and others are hereby required to use their utmost exertion in lodging them in safe custody." Amongst the names mentioned was: 1. John MYCOCK; Princess Royal; 30; Manchester, England; Five feet five and a half inches tall, red hair, florid and pock-pitted complexion; Absent from William REDFERN'S clearing party. "Any persons harbouring, concealing and maintaining any of the said absentees will be prosecuted for the offence. F.A. HELY, Principal Superintendent." The number 1 before his name tells you that this was the first time he had been advertised as an absconder. When a convict went missing, it was common practise for them to be advertised three times in a row, but in the early 1820's the number assigned next to their name revealed how many times they had been advertised. John absconded between 12 & 19 May 1824 and was apprehended between 8 & 15 June that year. He is next listed as absconding again in 1825 with the same advertisement in the Sydney Gazette for 1 December 1825; Page 4, Column 2. Stating same description - this time hazel eyes and dark red hair with freckles, escaping from Muldoon's Road Gang in the week leading up to 30 November 1825. He is again listed on the 13 December and again on the 20 December. John was prosecuted in August 1836 for fraud at Windsor and was found not guilty by a civil jury on 13 August 1836. His witnesses were Terrance MAGUIRE & Philip BUTCHE. Death Certificate (Registration Number: 5778) Lists 'George' as a fencer/farmer. Informant for his death was John LAUGHMAN, fencer and Laban WHITE, Coroner, Windsor. The undertaker was George TURNER, acting. Cause of death: Asthma.
