Note: Known as Jack. According to Anne WILSON ([email protected]): "Edward arrived into Sydney, New South Wales, Australia as a convict on 15 July 1822 onboard the 'Guildford'. He was tried at the Lancaster Quarter Sessions, sitting at Salford on 22 October 1821 and was found guilty of stealing property belonging to Samuel MORTON. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. It is quite possible that he may have committed other offences as I have recently found other trial records for an Edward HAYNES on previous dates but I haven't investigated these fully as yet. Interestingly, Edward was tried in the same month as John (George) MYCOCK, within a few days of each other, in the same county. It can be assumed that they were in gaol together. They also had a similar appearance. Edward was 5' 3 and three quarter inches tall, pale, freckled complexion, red hair and grey eyes. His occupation was given as Wire Drawer. He obtained his Certificate of Freedom on 25 May 1829; Number: 29/488. On arrival, Edward was distributed to Windsor and the 1823,1824 & 1825 Musters have him as a Government Servant to John DAY. He obviously stayed in the area after he received his Certificate of Freedom, where he met Ann MCCABE. Edward had a brother in the colony, also a convict. His name was John HAYNES. John married Elizabeth BULL. They lived at Liverpool, where all of Elizabeth's family resided. The 1841 Census has Edward HAYNES with his Certificate of Freedom, living at Windsor, married with three children, off stores. The record states that they had two boys; one under 2 years and one 7 years; one male (Edward) 21 and under 45 years and one male 60 years and upwards. (I have no idea who this is but he seems to be too old to be an assigned servant. Could have been someone just visiting at the time.) Also, one female under 2 years and one female 21 and under 45 years (Ann). The fact that they state there are three children living there makes it quite difficult to follow all the births of the children as only one son can be found as being born between 1836 and 1841. However, it is quite possible that one of the others was born in that time frame as an exact date of birth is not recorded in the registers. Also, we still haven't found the birth record of son John. If it was John, this would mean he was quite old when he married my great grandmother, Louisa Mary Ann DARLOW in 1892, giving rise to the speculation by some that he was married previously and had three other children, but so far I haven't found actual evidence of this." |
