Seperated from Army Nov. 7, 1945 Jackson, MS. Attended Bethel Grove School 2 years....Messick 1 year...Gregg 2 years..Capleville 2 years, Oakville 2 years, Whitehaven 1 year.His father had heart attack and Sterling JR. had to quit school to farm. The family share cropped in Capleville, Tn. (Bruce Hale farm). Grew cotton, corn and garden crops. Payment for rent was one-third of corn crop, one-fourth of cotton. He did his basic training (13 weeks) at Camp Gruber in Muskokee, OK. Did manuvers in LA. (tent city) then to Saleene, Tx. At Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Tx was transferred to active combat. First went to Casablanca, North Africa, then to Oran, Tunisia. Took a British transport ship to Naples, Italy where combat duty was started in Minturo, Italy. Traveled all over Italy releaving troops.Went past Rome, Florence, and Milan. Was transferred to Camp Shelby, MS to be discharged. Actual discharge from Foster General Hospital......Jackson, MS. Had a 60 day leave for rehabilitation between Indiana and Mississippi where he met Reba Lurline Crihfield. Dated and married on Saturday, Mar. 30, 1946 in Hernando, MS. Justice of the Peace, H. B. Vinson. WORK HISTORY: L. A. Young Spring and Wire CO. 2. Continental Piston Ring Co. 3. Nicky Warehouse 4. Poston Warehouses 5. Electrolux Sales 6. Kelly Springfield Tire Company. Started t $210 per month. Worked Kelly Tire Company for 30 years as Warehouse Manager Trouble Shooter. Sterling worked and lived in these cities: Memphis, Tn; Atlanta, Ga. , Kansas City, MO; Chicago, Ill; St. Louis, MO; Edison, N.J. ; finally at the home office of the company in Cumberland, MD. DEATH: He died Mar. 2, 2001 At. St. Francis Hospital- Memphis, Tn. Funeral Services were held March 6 -Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Av. with burial the next day, March 6 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, Tn. Attending the funeral along with many friends and relatives were his son Bert and his wife Karen along with Berts son, David. Also, Sterling's brothers, Clarence and Robert and his sister, Kathryn Virginia Lewis. Kathryns daughter, Diane sang for the funeral service.Attending the funeral from Concord Baptist Church of Booneville were Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Mauney and Mr. and Mrs. James D.
