Note: A discovery today (April 22, 2003) in the Oxford Mississippi Public Library ( Genealogy Department) showed the following information on Alexander Lawson and Jennie Simpson Darling's family. The COLLEGE HILL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH at Oxford has on file its complete historical records of church sessions etc. The following information was discovered in these records: DATE: April 3, 1870- Mr. Alexander Darling presented a certificate from the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. On motion Alex Darling was received as a member of this church in good and regular standing. DATE: APRIL21,1872- Mr. Alexander Darling and his wife Simpson Darling returned their letters of dismission from this church, as they had returned within its bounds, and their names enrolled as members of College church, they applied for baptism for their infant child, which request was granted. DATE: FEB.8, 1874 - Miss Jane Darling having left the country desired a letter of dismission from the Church. The request was granted, and the Clerk directed to furnish the letter. DATE: JULY 6,1879- The moderator then stated that he had in his hands a letter of dismission given by this church on the 3rd of June 1874 -the letters of Mr. Alexander Darling and Mrs. Jane Darling which have never been handed to any other Church was returned and they requested a readmission to this church. On motion their names were ordered to be replaced on the list as members of College Church. Closed with prayer. O. M. Moss, Clerk DATE: JUNE 14,1885- The committee appointed to divide the congregation into districts reported the following assignments............To Elder D. S. Tankersley the families of Mrs. Lewis, Mrs Delbridge, Alx Darling, W. C. Pettis, Jas. S. Dunlap Sr., J. A. Tankersley, D.S. Tankersley, Mrs. C. J. Buford, Paul C. Buford, DATE: AUG 4, 1887- On application letters of dismission were granted to Alex Darling and his wife Mrs. Jane Darling to join the M E Church at Grey Springs Lafayette County Mississippi. (Another ref. says this occurred Sept. 11, 1887. DATE: 1891 Alexander L. Darling listed as a voter at the Free Springs, MS. Box in the book: COME REMINESCE WITH US....Harmontown USA DATE: Sept 6,1914 - At this meeting Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Darling was received into this church by letter from the Methodist Church <Oxford> circuit. NOTE:On close examination by myself and two library attendants we concluded the word <Oxford> was in and the word appeared to be Abbeville instead. Church records suggest that they rejoined College Hill Presbyterian Church April 4, 1914. NOTE: Notes furnished by William Wayne Darling state "Grandpa and grandma (Alexander and Jennie) had 8 children including twins = a boy and a girl. Four children died as babies. 4 lived to be above 65 years.
