Note:   She wrote to me in 1990: "Here is a short sketch of my life as I can remember it: My father, Stephen Winford Smith married Martha Eugenia SImmons. He and others called her Jenny. They had ten children who lived to be adult and two baby boys who died the day they were born. The names of their children were; Aurella, Minnie, Hattie, Mitchell, Howell, Effie, Benjamin ( Called Ben), Winford, Della and Jacob (called Jake). My oldest sister, Aurella was born in 1879 and my youngest brother, Jake was born in 1903. My mother died in 1905 and my father died in 1936 (6 days before he was 80 years old). All of us children were born north of Tallehatchie River except Winford, Della and Jake. We went to school at Gamble's School about 2 miles from my home until 1911, when we moved to Hickory Flat, MS. We lived there 4 years, moved to Mineral Wells, MS. in 1916. Papa, Jake and I lived at Mineral Wells, on the road near Olive Branch, Miss and then moved to B. Massie's place near Harmontown, Ms. I lived there until 1920 when I moved to Memphis, Tenn., lived there one year, moved back to keep house for my father and Jake at Aunt Margaret Snipes, who lived near B. Massies's home, for one year, then moved back to Memphis where I now live (1990). I became a Christian when I was 9 years old and have been an active Christian since that time. My father was a devout Methodis and I joined the Methodist chuch when I was converted. In 1920, I joined the Baptist church at New Hope Baptist Church in the country near where I lived, and was baptized in the Tallahatchie River. I am now a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church and I love my Lord and I love my church. I wish I could have given you more information and could have written better but being 90 years of age prevents that. I hope Clarence will soon be feeling much better. I will pray for him. Love to all of you, Aunt Della Note: The "Clarence" referred to above was Clarence Walker, son of Jessie Darling Walker.
