Note: Information received from Scotland: cr/genfiles/libnp02/08/09/00 East Lothian Council. Christ Roberts-Local studies Officer (job share) Sept. 8, 2000 He writes; At the time of Margaret's baptism in1807 , Andrew was a soldier in the Edinburgh Militia. The Local History Centre doesn't hold the Old Parish Registers for Berwickshire, so I cannot check the details of baptisms 1811-1815. For the baptisms of his children in Prestonpans 1818-1825 , no occupation was given. Andrew Alexander was given as a salt manufacturer in Prestonpans at the wedding of his daughter, Margaret in 1836. The death notice of his widow in 1863 stated that she was the "relict of the late Andrew Alexander, salt manufacturer." He further writes; The Alexander family are on the other hand very interesting. I enclose details of Mary's parents and family and those of her paternal grandfather and her uncle William. This last family included a NOTABLE person, namely, THOMAS ALEXANDER, who became very well known for his work on the medical side of the army. I enclose some brief details about him, including an illustration of the statue erected to his memory in Prestonpans. I looked through the available census returns 1841, 1851, 1861 before the emigration of the family, and enclose the printed entries. GEORGE was living in Prestonpans in 1841 before his marriage but there was no occupation given for him. MARY was living with her mother, ALICE near the family of WILLIAM, salt manufacturer. In 1851, we find more details of the families, including, the parishes where they were born. Unfortunately, we have only the Old Parish Registers for East Lothian, so are unable to follow the Eccles line further. The 1861 census shows Mary to be a widow, as was her mother. GEORGE must have died before this date but after the conception of their last child, baptized in 1853. The Old Parish registers cease in 1854, when centralized certification began; thereafter all records are held in Register Houses in Edinburgh and we do not have copies here. This information is available through the internet, however, and I enlose details about this, along with general information on salt-making in Prestonpans.
