He died at General Hospital....Memphis, Tn. Left wife: Lizzie (Noble). She married Warren Walker after death of Thomas. Thomas murdered his brother, Charles (who was drunk) over a cow. ------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE MEMPHIS COMMERCIAL APPEAL May 15, 1929 SLAYS BROTHER IN DUEL OVER $30.00 DEBT Charles Walker Shot Down at Germantown HE ATTACKED WITH AX Had demanded Balance of Payment for cow sold to Prisoner Last January Wanted Animal Sold to Pay Claim A quarrel over a $30 debt- incurred in the sale of a cow last January - yesterday afternoon resulted in the slaying of Charles Walker, 50, by his brother, Thomas Walker, 62, at ] Thomas' home in Germantown. The elder Walker, after killing his brother, drove to the county jail and surrendered. From his iron cot in the jail cell he last night told his story of the shooting. "Charlie has always been a trouble maker," he said. "We all loved him and tried to help him out, but we didn't always succeed in keeping him peaceful. ACTED QUEERLY "Last January he sold me a cow for $50. I paid him $20. on account and was to pay the remainder as soon as possible. Charlie never said anything about the debt for a couple of months and I supposed he knew that I couldn't pay him right away.. "Somegtime ago Charlie acted queerly and we believed him to be mentally unbalanced. We had him put in the county hospital and he remained there for some time. Then he was discharged, got into a quarrel in Memphis and was sent to the workhouse. He got out of the workhouse a week ago and notified me that I had to pay my $30 debt to him at once. I explained that that would be impossible and he said no more about it. Yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock he came to my house and demanded that I pay him. He had been living somewhere in Memphis and when I asked him where he lived, intending to promise to come to his home and give him the money later he became enraged. Things were going from bad to worse and I simply told him point blank that I couldn't pay him right then and walked into the house. KEPT THREATENING ME "I went into my bedroom and sad down on the bed. Charlie was standing outside, cursing and threatending me. I called to him and told him to be quiet and go on home. Then he grabbed up an ax that was standing near the house and shouted that he would brain me. He said I had to take the cow into town and sell it at once and pay him the money. "When I told hiim to be calm he started toward the front door, barandishing the ax and shouting that he would kill me. "As he opened the front door of the house I grabbed a shotgun that was standing by the bed and called him to stop. He rushed at me, the ax held over his head and I fired. "He fell across the doorsill of my bedroom. Thats all I know about it. I called up Lon Callis the constable here and then went to the county jail and gave myself up." Callis declared, that Charles Walker lived for an hour after he was shot. The shotgun was loaded with buckshot and the charge struck him in the face. Three of the shot penetrated the base of the dead man's brain. Besides his wife, Charles Walker is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vesta Adkins, 391 South Lauderdale Street, and Margaret Walker, who lived at the home farm about a mile from the Thomas Walker home. Two sisters also survive him. They are: Mrs. J. P. Hunt 880 Williford Place and Mrs. William Beale, Germantown. J. T. Hinton & Son have charge of arrangements for the funeral.
