Notes
a. Note:   A booklet, "Descendants of Hugh Acey Mack Stinson" by Thelma H. Bull, daughter of Mary Agnes Stinson, gives several details about the life of Hugh A. Stinson. Most of this is based on verifiable sources, but some is family oral history passed on through several generations. She maintains that Hugh was born in England about 1821. His father left England in 1836, taking with him Hugh, a daughter, and another son. They went first to the northern states and then to Alabama. Eventually the father left the three siblings with a family named Farr and departed for Mississippi. He had promised to return but was never heard from again. Mrs. Bull found no verifiable records of the other two siblings. Hugh became a landowner in Shelby Co, Al and was a slave owner until the Civil War. When Hugh died he left his entire estate to his widow and his son, David. This created a rift in the family which finally resulted in court action being brought by the other surviving family members. This was settled before trial by an agreement in which all other siblings deeded their interest to David. Hugh Mack is buried in Shelby Co, Alabama. Comment: I believe Mrs. Bull was mistaken about Hugh Acey having been born in England. Kay Terry thinks that the parents of Hugh were John Stinson and Rebecca Lyon, that Rebecca had a sister married to Hughes, that the sister birthed two children. The sister, her husband, and Rebecca all died at nearly the same time leaving John Stinson to alone care for four children. He eventually left these four children in the care of their maternal grandparents who, according to Orphan's Court records of Shelby Co, adopted and reared them. Mrs Bull's claim about a relative having come from England could be correct, but probably it was someone other than Hugh Acey or John Stinson.
