Note: Data & Military Service from "Grave Records of Louisa County, Iowa" Marriage Record: Iowa Marriages, 1851-1900. "John O. Zimmerman to Mary A. (Mrs.) Gipple. Note: Other sources state middle initial is "C." His marriage record is probably correct. WHERE WAS HE IN 1850? Difficult to trace without a father's first name and/or county of origin in PA. He was not in Iowa in 1850. Of the hundreds of John Zimmermans in PA in 1850 only one is indexed as "John O. Zimmerman." He is a 25 yr. old "carpenter" (John O's trade) born in PA with a 22 year old wife, Mary, and 1 yr. old son "Henry." (Montgomery Co., PA, Worcester Twp., p. 279) His age does not agree with that of the 29 yr. old John of 1860 nor the 36 yr. old one of 1870. John O., however, may have been a party to the VERY common "diminishing age syndrome" of westward trekkers: That age decreases with the move West! If this is the correct person, my theory is that the family moved out to Louisa County in the mid-1850's; the child John C. was born, the child Henry and wife Mary died, probably in 1859. This finds John and his infant son boarding with Aurilla Freland in the 1860 Census. If this is true, then John O. was probably born about 1825, since it is more likely that the age given in the earlier census (1850) is the correct age. (His grave record states 1834. He was probably 9 yrs. older.) THEORY ONLY. 1860 CENSUS: LOUISA CO., IOWA, Grandview Twp., p. 0. The presumably widowed John and his baby son are living in the household of "Aurilla Freland," 55, "laundress," $400/300, New York; "William Freland," 15, Ohio; "John Zimmerman," 29, "carpenter," $300, PA; "John C.
