They farmed for different owners and also rented farms. Wilber worked for Columbus City Township on road work with his team. They moved to Detroit, Wayne Co., MI in March of 1926. He worked for the Hudson Motor Car Company until March, 1930, when he moved his family to a rented farm in Martin, Allegan Co., MI. He rented farms until 1942 when he bought a farm 2 miles south of Martin on Old 131. He sold it to his son, Bob, when he retired and moved to Martin on Lee Street where he bought a home. There, he worked as sexton for both East and South Martin Cemeteries until his health failed. He lived alone for two years after his wife died; then he was moved to a nursing home in Saugatuck for six years. He died of stroke. Nancy had typhoid fever in 1908 when Vernon was a baby. In 1817 Nancy and the new baby, Harold Burdean, 2 weeks old, contracted the flu and the baby died. They had 13 children and attended the Methodist Church." |
