Notes
a. Note:   Article sent to the Black Country Bugle 15 May 2008 A Hint of a Scandal in the Walker Family History (Who is Robert Victor Walker’s Real Father? Who is Lillian’s Mother?) Dear Editor, I am trying to locate any of your readers that knew or knew of my Grandfather Robert Victor Walker (Documentation indicates that ‘Victor’ is an assumed name as it does not appear anywhere until he marries grand-mother Emily on 26 November 1906) and his daughter Lillian Walker. Robert V was born 23 April 1875 in Rabone Lane Smethwick. He died on 4March 1955 in the Birmingham Accident Hospital after being run over. Indeed, if any reader recognises ANY of the names I’ve mentioned below I would be delighted to hear from them also! Robert Victor had a daughter named Lillian Elizabeth Walker (we thinkthat Elizabeth may be an assumed middle name.) and according to the 1901 census she was aged 3 meaning she was born about 1897-8. Her Mother is unknown and her birth certificate can not be found. Lillian was brought up by Robert Victor and his Wife Emily Thompson (b. 18 March 1879) they were married 26 November 1906. Lillian apparently had a relationship - no marriage records found - with a Raymond Howel/ls in the Oldbury area. Lillian’s Death Certificate indicates that she was Lillian Elizabeth ‘Peat’ at the time of her death in October 1950. She was living in 39 Pottery Road Warley Oldbury immediately prior to her death. We believe that Lillian married James Peat but can not find a marriage certificate. We do know that during the Second World War, Lillian worked for a company called Rowley Regis Quarries who provided ‘fill’ for airport runways, apparently for the RAF. She had a company car, so may have been part of the Management Team. Robert and Emily moved into ‘Back’ 61 George Street in Smethwick and had 8 other children, among them, my father William Arthur Walker (b. 1918) and my Aunt Louisa (b. 1916). In 1930 they moved to 16 The Horseshoe Warley, where Aunt Lou lived until 1984 shortly before her death in 1985. My father William (Bill) Walker enlisted with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and served for a time on the Western Front. He was then moved to Singapore just prior to the Fall of Singapore, and was a Japanese PoW on the Burma Railway until the conclusion of the War in 1945. Robert Victor¹s parents were Robert Walker and Phoebe Billins. He hada brother Edward whose birth was about 1879. Phoebe Billins b. 9 March 1842 and Robert Walker b. 20 February 1839 were married on 17 November 1861. It is believed that Robert Walker Senior passed away around 1880. Phoebe went on to marry Thomas Dickens on 4 August 1883. In the 1891 Census Phoebe appears as “Dickens” aged 50 along with: Thomas Dickens aged 61 (her ‘new’ husband) Robert Dickens aged 16 (this is Robert Victor) b. 23 April 1875 Edward Dickens aged 12 b. abt. 1879 It is assumed that Robert and Edward took the surname ‘Dickens’ when Phoebe married Thomas Dickens. Robert Victor reverted to Walker when he married Emily. In the 1901 Census Phoebe is there as Dickens aged 61 Robert Dickens aged 26 (this is Robert Victor) Lillian Walker aged 3 (this is Lillian Elizabeth - daughter to RobertVictor and whose Mother is unknown.) In the 1901 Census they were living at 61 Bridge Street Smethwick. They were all known as “Dicken” at this time, as Phoebe had married again to Thomas Dicken. Neither Thomas Dicken nor Edward are mentioned in the 1901 census, nor can they be found elsewhere. It is assumed that they had died by 1901. Robert Victor is “Walker” on both his marriage and death certificates. However, his birth certificate shows his father as “Thomas” WALKER. We have confirmed that Robert Walker and Phoebe were married in 1861. Robert Victor was born in 1875 while Phoebe and Robert were still married, why then is Robert Victor’s father noted as “THOMAS”? After Robert Walker Senior passed away, Phoebe married a “THOMAS” Dickens. When my Father’s (William Arthur Walker) brother, Uncle Bob was born, he was Emily and Robert Victor’s first son, his birth was registered: ROBERT WILLIAM THOMAS WALKER Phoebe’s 1st husband Emily’s Father Phoebe’s 2nd husband Could it be that Robert Victor was a result of an extra marital affair with Thomas Dickens? And, in order to avoid a scandal, did Robert Walker Senior agree to raise Robert Victor as his own? Did Robert Senior insist that ‘Thomas’ appear on the birth certificate to acknowledge Thomas Dickens as the natural father? Could it be that Robert Senior was sterile and the ‘assistance’ of Thomas was sought in producing off spring? Did Thomas then marry Phoebe after Robert Senior's death so that he could be a proper Father to Robert Victor and Edward? Was Robert Senior Edward’s Father, or was Thomas Edward’s Father also? It begs the question, are we all really Dickens’ and not Walker’s at all? Questions, questions, questions…. Will we ever know? I do hope that someone can help!
