Notes
a. Note:   Oldest Business Man is Dead William Walker Passes Away After an Illness of About One Year Funeral Saturday Morning Wm. Walker, one of the oldest business men of Pendleton, died at his home at State and West streets at 6:30 o´clock Wednesday evening after a prolonged illness. Mr. Walker had been engaged in the livery business in Pendleton since 1871, and was the oldest business man in the city. More than a year ago Mr. Walker was a victim of paralysis and since that time has not been able to look after business affairs, and the business has been managed by his son-in-law, Camron (sic) Studley, and for the past six months has not been able to leave his home. Wm. Walker was born in Hancock County, May 7, 1838 and came to Madison County in 1868. He was the son of John Walker, who was a native of North Carolina. In 1871 he established his present livery business and has been in continuous business since with the exception of six months, when in 1873 was in business in Anderson. He was married three times, his first wife being a Miss Lewis, to which union two sons were born, Edward Walker (deceased), and John Walker of Fortville. His second wife was a Miss Personett, and to them were born two sons, Grant of Indianapolis, and Clint of Mishawaka. His third wife, whom he married Dec. 25th, 1872 was Mrs. Mary Kurtz, formerly Miss Mary Paul, and to them were born four children, three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Studley, of Pendleton, Mrs. Sara Cliff, of Loogootee, Miss Margaret, of Indianapolis, and one son, S.B. Walker, a teacher in the Pendleton High Schools. Mr. Walker united with the M.E. Church when a young man and was an active worker at his home church in Hancock County. About two years age he renewed his obligations to the M.E. church in Pendleton and has lived a consistent Christian life. He was a charter member of the Sicilian Lodge No. 234, of Pendleton. Mr. Walker was an honest, straight forward business man and had friends all over the county, and will be greatly missed in the business circles of this place. He is survived by eight children and twenty-one grand children. The funeral services will be held from the M.E. Church Saturday morning at nine o´clock, conducted by Rev. William A Griest, and internment will be in the Mt. Carmel cemetery in Hancock county. Friends wishing to view the remains may do so between the hours of two and eight o´clock pm today.
