Notes
a. Note:   Shelbyville Republican Wednesday October 23, 1946 Shelbyville, Indiana SMILEY RITES TO BE THURSDAY Levi P. Smiley, 88, Dies At Hospital A hip fracture suffered 19 days ago has resulted in the death of Levi P. Smiley, 88-year-old retired county farmer. Mr. Smiley died at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Major hospital, where he was taken for treatment following a fall at his home near Lewis Creek. Mr. Smiley was born in Kentucky on August 3, 1858, a son of John and Mary (Richardson) Smiley, and was the last of a family of 15 children. He moved to Shelby county in early life and for many years operated a farm in Moral township, near London. He had been retired for the past 15 years and resided one mile east of Lewis Creek. On August 26, 1880, he was married to Emma Markland, of Bartholomew county, and to this union seven children were born. Three of them survive with the widow, they are Delbert Smiley, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Alta Hern, of Shelbyville, and Mrs. Eva Pool, of Shelby township. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Smiley was a member of the Hawcreek Baptist church in Bartholomew county. The last rites will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Loren H. Murphy funeral home. Burial will be made in the Moravian cemetery at Hope. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m. today and are requested by the family to omit flowers. Notes and questions: Pulaski County Birth Records show Levi was the son of John Smiley and Jane Reid? (In looking at the birth records, it appears there is a transposing error in the listing as Mary's name is on the next line). But Mary Hudson was still living in 1880 The Obit says his mother is Mary Richardson. Other records say his mother may have been Mary Polly Smiley. Also, he is listed as the last of 15. Was this the youngest child, or the last to pass away?
