a. Note:   . He was was first town clerk and treasurer; a member of first board of selectmen (1773); was a delegate to the 1st constitutional convention of 1781, which he assisted in formulating; and was also a member of the first Legislature of NH (1784). Believed to be well-to-do, he loaned the State considerable sums during the Revolutionary War, the repayment of which enabled him to send two of his sons, David and Robinson, to college - - the first college graduates from Jaffrey. In 1810, leaving his farm to his son Hugh, he and Sarah went to reside with their son, Rev. Robinson Smiley, in Springfield, VT, where he died in 1813. The children of William and Sarah are all recorded among the Vital Records of Windham, Rockingham Co. and Jaffrey, Cheshire Co., NH.
Note:   William came to America with his parents and two brothers, settling in Haverhill, MA in 1727 and then in Windham (now Londonderry), NH, in 1743. After his marriage, he and Sarah moved to Jaffrey, NH, where he was one of the first settlers
