Lansing, MI, USA. EDUCATION: Dr. Walker went to Keystone Academy, in PA and graduated June 11, 1930. He then went to Colgate College (now University) in Hamilton, NY and graduated in 1934. He attended Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa (now part of Drexel University) and graduated in 1938? MILITARY: Dr. Walker served in WWII with the 61st SeaBee Batallion. He was a plank owner. The 61ST Battallion begain assemblling on December 4, 1942 at Camp Peary, Williamsburg, VA. LTjg Walker, MC-V, USNR was one of the first two officers assigned to the 61st Battalion on December 5, 1942. Both were the medical Officers. Next stop was Gulfport. There three trains carried the battalion to Camp Rousseau, Port Hueneme, CA. Additional training for overseas duty and embarkation on April 14, 1943 on the Dutch freighter-transport, the M.S. Brastagi. April 22, 1943 the whole Battalion was initiated into the Shellback organization of Neptunus Rex. On April 26 all were became members of the Golden Dragon upon crossing the 180th Meridian. The first port call was Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides Islands for 11 days. After the journey out on the M.S. Brastagi, the Battallion arrived in Sealark Channel, off Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on May 15, 1943 with a complement of 27 officers. LTjg Walker, MC-V was promoted in January 1944 along with 4 others to Lieutenant. Other deployement sites included New Zealand; Emirau Island; Staging at Banika, Russell Islands; Leyte, PI. Detached February 1945 and returned to the States. 61ST BATTALION (http://www.nbvc.navy.mil/museum/SeabeeHistory/battalions.html) The 61st NCB was formed at Camp Peary in January 1943, and trained there until Feb. 27, when it departed for Gulf-port, Miss. After two weeks at Gulfport the Battalion left for Hueneme for additional training. The entire outfit shipped out April 14, arriving in Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, on May 2. Ten days later, the 61st boarded ship again and landed at Guadalcanal where they were on duty until February 1944. On Feb. 19 the outfit sailed for Auckland, N. Z., leaving there in the middle of March for Emirau in the Bismarck Archipelago. The 61st arrived at Emirau March 30 and remained until July 21, 1944, when it left for the Russell Islands, arriving there three days later. Alter a little more than two months in the Russells, the Battalion shipped out again, this time to the Philippines, by way of Manus and Hollandia. The 61st entered Leyte Gulf on Oct. 23 (D-Day plus three) and began unloading off Dulag, Leyte. In November and December of 1944, the outfit moved to Guiuan, Samar, the last echelon arriving on Dec. 30. It was still on duty there at wars end.
