Henry was given 60 pound to enable him to emigrate to New Zealand and the farm was let to Samuel Steep late of Ballyriggan from 29 Sep 1865 at the same rent. Henry & Mary (nee Mee) Stark who were given 60 pound to enable them to go to New Zealand. Their farm at Thomastown was let at the same rent to Samuel Steep who haad formally had 5 acres at Ballyriggan. The Starks sailed 15 August 1865 on board the 'Blue Jacket' arriving at Lyttelton (the port for Christchurch Canterbury), on 13 November 1865. The group consisted of Henry & Mary both said to be 55 years old (they were actually born in 1807), their children Ann aged 28, Mary aged 22, William aged 20, Richard aged 18, Prudence aged 17, and Catherine aged 6. The men were listed as farm labourers and the women as domestic servants and a dairymaid. All except Catherine had been baptised in Kilfanane church where their parents were married on 21 October 1836.. The couple had three other sons, Richard born 1839 (who died young), Henry born 1837 and Thomas born 1840. This was not the end of the Starks troubles however, as they had a difficult and traumatic voyage to their new land with several deaths on board. On arrival the ship was quarantined on account of typhus, modified smallpox and chicken pox on board; anything not passed through boiling water was destroyed and the between decks scrubbewd and limed. Iam indebted to Garry McKay of Wellington, New Zealand for the news story ffrom the Lyttelton Times, 15 November 1865, as well as the details from the Biographical Shipping Index 1840 - 1870, Turnbull Library,Wellington,New Zealand, Early Shipping Days, vol 3, page 9. *******************************************************************
